New Delhi is ramping up efforts to shield its exporters from the ripple effects of escalating tensions in West Asia. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal revealed on Monday that the government is finalizing a series of measures to mitigate disruptions in trade flows.
These initiatives, aimed at addressing logistical bottlenecks and supply chain snarls, could be announced by the end of this week. Agarwal highlighted how the regional unrest is threatening both India’s exports to the area and imports from key partners.
‘Shipping routes are severely hampered, and air cargo operations face significant hurdles,’ he noted. Exporters are grappling with delays and increased costs as vessels reroute and flights scale back.
To tackle these challenges head-on, an inter-ministerial group under the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has been established. This task force convenes daily at 10 AM to review exporter feedback and devise swift solutions.
The group’s mandate is clear: identify pain points, gather real-time insights from businesses, and ensure trade continuity. Agarwal emphasized that while India’s overall exports for the current fiscal year are projected to surpass last year’s figures, the West Asia crisis is capping the country’s full potential.
‘Without these obstacles, we could have achieved even stronger growth,’ he stated. To offset losses, the government plans to aggressively tap alternative markets, redirecting surplus exports to willing buyers elsewhere.
This proactive stance underscores New Delhi’s commitment to safeguarding economic interests amid geopolitical volatility. Stakeholders are watching closely for the upcoming announcements, which could include incentives, eased regulations, or diplomatic interventions to smooth trade paths.
