A new wave of cybercrime targets OTT consumers with fraudulent subscription offers. Criminals are advertising OTT subscriptions at drastically reduced prices to deceive potential victims. They contact users through WhatsApp, promising subscriptions for as little as Rs 500, a fraction of the usual Rs 1,500 cost. Once a consumer is tricked, their bank accounts are emptied rapidly. The fraudulent scheme involves the use of APK files and remote access apps that, once installed, steal sensitive financial data. Authorities emphasize the importance of caution when searching for OTT subscriptions online, as ads can redirect users to scams. Separately, a former advocate has been arrested by Delhi Police for a Rs 100 crore Ponzi scheme.
