A major update to Near Field Communication (NFC) has been announced with the release of NFC Release 15. The update, developed by the NFC Forum, enhances the operational range of NFC technology, extending the maximum distance for contactless communication from 0.5 cm to 2 cm. This seemingly small increase represents a significant improvement, leading to more user-friendly interactions for various applications. The improvements extend to technical enhancements that promote speed and reliability, benefiting devices such as wearables and smartphones. The update promises to improve user experiences in public transport, wearable technology, automotive applications, and mobile payments. This also paves the way for broader adoption of NFC Digital Product Passports, which can track products’ entire lifecycle, supporting sustainable practices.
