New Delhi is witnessing a transformative shift in the mining sector as artificial intelligence takes center stage. Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy announced on Wednesday that pilot programs are harnessing AI to ramp up production in India’s mines while tackling theft, enhancing efficiency, and bolstering safety measures.
In an exclusive conversation, Reddy highlighted the multifaceted potential of AI. ‘We’re testing AI applications that promise higher productivity,’ he stated. ‘It will not only prevent pilferage but also streamline operations and safeguard workers.’ Ministry officials are actively exploring innovative AI integrations at ongoing summits to drive these improvements.
The minister’s remarks come amid the India AI Impact Summit 2026, a pivotal platform shaping global AI agendas with India’s leadership. Anchored on seven thematic pillars—economic growth, democratization of AI resources, inclusive empowerment, trustworthy AI, human capital, science, and resilient innovation—the event underscores AI’s role in sustainable progress.
Echoing this vision, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi detailed AI’s deployment in welfare schemes. Under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, over 80 crore beneficiaries receive grain through smart warehouses, PDS systems, and the Ann Chakra AI tool. This technology optimized routes, saving 250 crore rupees by identifying the nearest storage facilities.
Power sector insights from Union Minister Manohar Lal added another layer. ‘AI can deliver precise, real-time data for electricity supply, resolving longstanding issues and ensuring 24/7 power to consumers,’ he affirmed. As India pioneers AI-driven governance, these initiatives signal a future where technology fuels national development.
