The Prime Minister said that it is also difficult for the Congress party to win more than 50 seats in the Lok Sabha polls. “…No matter how hard it tries, it is very difficult for the Congress to go past half-century, 50 seats. ‘Surprising…’: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge Questions ECI’s Priority In Voter Turnout Row |
New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday asserted that it is surprising to see the Election Commission responding to a letter written by him to the leaders of the INDIA-bloc but choosing to ignore several complaints Kharge raised directly to the ECI.
Earlier, in a letter addressed to the CEC and several election commissioners, Kharge pointed out the electoral committee’s lack of prompt action in addressing the overtly communal and caste-driven remarks made by leaders of the governing party.
Reacting to the letter by the Congress president expressing concerns regarding the delay in disclosing the voter turnout for the two phases of Lok Sabha polls, the Commission said that it is an attempt to promote a prejudiced narrative under the pretext of seeking clarifications.
Kharge responded to the EC’s remark and said that the letter was clearly addressed to the alliance leaders and not the commission.
“It is surprising that the Election Commission of India wanted to respond to this letter while ignoring several other complaints given directly to it. I have certain misgivings about the language of the letter, but I will not press on that issue as I understand the pressures they are working under,” reported PTI, citing Kharge’s letter sent to the EC on Saturday.
He said that while the EC letter says that it respects citizens’ right to inquire, on the other hand, it “threatens citizens in the form of an advice to exercise caution.”
Kharge said, “I am happy that the Commission understands that it has the mandate to conduct smooth, free, and fair elections under the constitution. However, the lack of urgency shown by the Commission in acting against blatantly communal and casteist statements being made by the leaders of the ruling party that vitiate the electoral process seems puzzling,” reported PTI.
In a five-page reply containing several annexures, the election commission dismissed accusations of mismanagement and tardiness in disclosing voter turnout statistics for the initial two phases of the Lok Sabha elections. It labelled Kharge’s allegations as unwarranted,” ” “without facts,” and “reflective of a biased and deliberate attempt to spread confusion”.
In the letter, the Congress leader mentioned that, besides delaying voter turnout, the ECI did not mention several crucial data points, such as votes cast in each parliamentary constituency and their corresponding assembly constituencies.
Opposition leaders on Friday met with senior officials of the Election Commission to address concerns over voter turnout statistics and complaints about the violations of the model code by leaders of the ruling party.

Phase-3 Campaigning Ends; Fate Of Over 1300 Candidates From 93 Lok Sabha Seats To Be Sealed On May 7; Check Key Candidates |
Lok Sabha Chunav 2024: In the third and another crucial phase for the Lok Sabha elections 2024, a total of 93 seats are going to the polls. However, the Betul seat of Madhya Pradesh is going to polls in the third phase after polling was earlier postponed due to death of a candidate. Also, the voting for the Anantnag-Rajouri seat was also postponed to May 26, thus, 93 seats are up for grab in this phase. The 93 seats are spread across 10 states and 1 union territory.
Key Poll Planks
In the third phase the BJP-led NDA and the INDIA bloc of Congress fiercely attacked each other making muslim reservations, constitution and sexual harassment charges against JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna issues to woo the voters. ‘Takes Pride In Ghus Ke Marna…’: Former Pakistan Minister Fawad Chaudhary Attacks PM Narendra Modi After Praise For Rahul Gandhi |
The statement of Pakistan’s former Information and Broadcasting Minister, Fawad Chaudhary, has sparked a controversy in India. Chaudhary shared a post on social media praising Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, prompting the BJP to attack Congress and even Prime Minister Modi to accuse Congress of siding with Pakistan. Without naming Rahul Gandhi, PM Modi stated that Pakistan wants to see him as Prime Minister. Fawad Chaudhry has now launched a new attack on PM Modi via X (formerly Twitter).
“A friend advised me to balance and say something positive about #Modi since hours I am thinking what can be a positive in an Extremist, dogmatist and hater? Someone who take pride in “ghus k Marna” someone who justify killing people only because of faith? Who is demolishing mosques to change history and taking pride in extremist ideology?,” Chaudhary said in a X post.
Earlier on Wednesday, Fawad shared a video clip of Rahul Gandhi’s speech and praised the Congress leader. He captioned the post, “Rahul on fire.”
Rahul on fire …. https://t.co/6pi1mL0bQN
— Ch Fawad Hussain (@fawadchaudhry) May 1, 2024During his election rally in Gujarat’s Anand, PM Modi also mentioned Fawad Chaudhry’s post and accused the Congress and Pakistan of collaboration. While PM Modi accused the Congress of directly colluding with Pakistan under the guise of Fawad’s post, Rahul Gandhi demanded an explanation from PM Modi regarding Prajwal Ravanna’s sex scandal.
Rahul Gandhi did not respond to Fawad Chaudhry’s question, but BJP leaders are questioning why a Pakistani leader who spews venom against India would support Rahul Gandhi. Meanwhile, the Congress has criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and accused him of diverting attention away from the election issues by dragging Pakistan.
With just five days left for the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections, it is clear that, after issues like mangalsutra, wealth redistribution, and Muslim reservation, the mention of Pakistan will dominate BJP and PM Modi’s election campaign.

It’s Laloo Prasad Yadav Vs Rohini Acharya In Bihar’s Saran LS Seat |
PATNA: RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya’s bid to reclaim the Saran Lok Sabha seat, once represented by the socialist leader, for the party is being challenged by a namesake of her father. Contestant Laloo Prasad Yadav, a local farmer from Bihar’s Saran district, the ‘karmabhoomi’ of his famous namesake, has a penchant for contesting elections.
This time, he filed his nomination papers as a candidate of the Rashtriya Jansambhavna Party (RJP) for Saran Lok Sabha seat on April 26. Earlier, Laloo Prasad Yadav had filed his nominations for 2022 Presidential polls as well. He had also filed his nomination papers for the 2017 Presidential polls, which was a contest between the then Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind, who went on to win, and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, who was a native of the soil.
However, his papers got rejected in the 2017 Presidential polls since those were not endorsed by an adequate number of proposers. “I have been contesting Lok Sabha polls from Saran constituency for the last several terms. I had contested against former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi as well. This time, I am contesting against her daughter Rohini Acharya,” Laloo Prasad Yadav told PTI over the phone.
He also exuded of “winning the election by a comfortable margin”. “I engage in agriculture for a living and also do social work. I keep trying my luck, from panchayat to Presidential polls. I am leaving no stone unturned to win this election… People of Saran are with me,” Yadav said.
When asked about his opponents calling him ‘dharti pakad’ (one who clings on to the earth), a term associated with those who like to contest polls for the sake of thrill and publicity, and ‘vote katwa’ (one who divides votes), Yadav said, “I don’t care about all these labels. They are my opponents and they will say such things. I contest polls only for the sake of my electorate in Saran.” According to the affidavit filed by the RJP candidate, Yadav has Rs 5 lakh cash in hand whereas his wife has 2 lakh cash. He owns movable assets worth Rs 17.60 lakh and his wife owns movable assets worth Rs 5.20 lakh.
