The news has stunned the internet but understandably fans have accepted it slowly penning emotional notes for the legendary former captain. Some of the fans even labeled this season as 'End Of An Era' on social media as it is the first time neither Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are leading a single team.

Coming to Kohli, former RCB and India captain penned an emotional note for Dhoni after the news came in that he is no longer leading the Chennai franchise which he led to five IPL titles. The legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Thursday “handed” over the Chennai Super Kings captaincy to opener Ruturaj Gaikwad on the eve of the IPL opener here, a stunning decision that is bound to send speculation swirling on his playing future with the franchise.

In a post on X, the Indian Premier League made the announcement a day before CSK take on Royal Challengers Bangaluru. The five-time champions issued a brief statement soon after.

“MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings' captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season,” said CSK.

There is speculation that Dhoni will retire at the end of the season and therefore the franchise felt the need for a smooth transition in the stalwart's presence as a player.

Gaikwad, who has played six ODIs and 19 T20s for India, made his CSK debut in 2020 and has gone on to represent the team in 52 games.

“Whatever Dhoni does, it is in the best interest of the team. I got to know of the decision just before the captains' meeting. You have to respect his decision, it is his call,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told PTI.

The stylish opener had a memorable run last year, aggregating 590 runs in 16 games at an impressive strike rate of 147.50. His breakout year was 2021 when he amassed 635 runs in 16 games. The 27-year-old from Maharashtra is not new to captaincy, having led the Indian team to the gold medal in the Asian Games last year.

CSK and Dhoni share an unbreakable bond and the World Cup-winning captain is expected to keep a significant role in the franchise going forward albeit not as a player. CSK had attempted the leadership transition even in the 2022 edition but it did not work out with Ravindra Jadeja handing back the captaincy duties to Dhoni after eight games.

“It didn't work out at that time, this is different,” said Visawanathan. Dhoni officially announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020 but has kept playing the IPL.

The 42-year-old, who played with a dodgy knee last season, underwent a surgery after leading CSK to their fifth title.Dhoni has played as many as 250 IPL matches, scoring more than 5000 runs at a strike rate of 135.92. Due to his knee issues, Dhoni pushed himself down to number 8 in the batting order last season but after regaining full fitness, he is expected to bat higher up this edition. Former India pacer Irfan Pathan met Dhoni recently and claimed that the latter appears to be in good shape following the knee surgery.

“Last year, Dhoni said he was giving a gift to his fans with his cricket. I met with him a few days ago, he was playing pickleball for two hours non-stop. His knee was as fit as it ever was. It's an exciting time for fans; he now has his vintage old look. Will we get the vintage old Dhoni too?” Pathan asked on Star Sports.

“His role has changed in the past two years. He comes in lower-order, plays lesser deliveries but hits the big shots, the strike rate is high. It's a small innings but a memorable one.”I think there won't be much of a change in that this year. He will continue to play that role,” said Pathan.

  • WATCH: MS Dhoni's Joyful Celebration After Hitting DJ Bravo For Six During CSK Training Goes Viral | cricket news

Since the inception of the tournament in 2008, Dhoni has remained an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Last season, his team clinched the championship for the fifth time by defeating the Gujarat Giants in the final, a feat shared only with the Mumbai Indians. At 42, he embraced his long-haired look reminiscent of his early days when he emerged as a dynamic striker in 2004. However, it's not just his hairstyle that evokes nostalgia among fans; Dhoni has been consistently seen honing his skills in the nets, reliving the big shots that defined his vintage years.

Bowling from around the wicket, Bravo cleverly delivered a slower ball aimed towards a wide line, a common tactic employed by fast bowlers to contain Dhoni during the latter stages of an innings. However, Dhoni anticipated the move and swiftly shuffled across, unleashing a powerful stroke over mid-wicket. Bravo, seemingly in good spirits, put his hands on his head in mock disbelief, while Dhoni celebrated the shot by raising both his hands along with his bat in triumph. Cricket remains integral but “not everything” for MS Dhoni, says his former India teammate Zaheer Khan of the man with a penchant for catching the world off-guard and an eagerness to explore various avenues. At 42, the two-time World Cup winning captain Dhoni is gearing up to lead Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming IPL.

The charismatic former India skipper had quit international cricket four years back.

“MS Dhoni understood a long time ago that he is passionate about cricket and it is an integral part of his life. But it couldn't be everything,” Zaheer said in an episode dedicated to the Dhoni on JioCinema.

Besides his World Cup triumphs and India's march to the world number one position in Tests, Dhoni has led CSK to a joint-record five IPL titles, having taken on the top leadership role from the league's inaugural edition in 2008. (IPL 2024: With Likes Of Marcus Stoinis, Nicholas Pooran In Batting Lineup, What Role Will KL Rahul Play? SWOT Analysis Of LSG)

Zaheer said, “When you're playing, switching off (from the game) is very important. Cricket is not everything. Every cricketer has to face this eventually.”

“When you step away from the game, you may not have a lot of options. We've seen many athletes struggle after retiring because they gave everything to the game, and when they left it, they didn't know what to do. In this sense, MS Dhoni understood a long time ago that he is passionate about cricket and it is an integral part of his life. But it couldn't be everything.”He keeps doing things outside of the sport. For example, his interest in bikes. He's always researching them.”

Speaking about Dhoni, ex-India and CSK all-rounder Suresh Raina said he wants his former teammate to continue playing in IPL for another five years. (IPL 2024: Alan Walker Congratulates Virat Kohli For Becoming Father Once Again, Video Goes Viral – WATCH)

“The biggest question is who'll be their next captain? Even if MS Dhoni stepped away as captain, he'll be in the dugout whether it's as a mental toughness coach or just for his presence. But the question is, who is he going to nurture? This is a pivotal year for CSK. Who does MS have his eyes on? Ruturaj Gaikwad is a good option. This year is a very important year for CSK, more than for MS Dhoni. Because we'll see who he is going to select as his deputy and probably say: 'You handle this now, I've been looking after the team since 2008. You take care of the yellow, I will wear the jersey and sit in the dressing room',” Raina. said.

“It's important now to see how he plans for the future. He's 42 years old. I would love to see him play for five more years, or at least two or three more years.” (With PTI inputs)

  • Rajasthan Royals' SWOT Analysis Ahead Of IPL 2024: Strong Top Order And Spin Attack But No Quality All-Rounders | cricket news

The stage is set, the stakes are high, and anticipation reverberates through the cricketing world as the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) looms large on the horizon. Among the contenders vying for glory stands the Rajasthan Royals (RR), a team steeped in history and determined to carve its legacy once more in the annals of cricketing greatness. Led by the dynamic Sanju Samson, RR embarks on a journey filled with promise, potential, and the pursuit of excellence.

    Sunday the King rides. __ pic.twitter.com/b23wXPaqfN — Rajasthan Royals (@rajasthanroyals) March 17, 2024

    Strengths

RR's batting arsenal boasts an array of talent, headlined by the explosive trio of Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. With Jaiswal's breathtaking displays in the previous season, Buttler's match-winning prowess, and Samson's astute leadership, the team's top order exudes confidence and capability, ready to unleash havoc upon opposition bowlers. In the spin department, RR possesses a lethal combination of experience and skill. With Yuzvendra Chahal, Adam Zampa, and Ravichandran Ashwin in their ranks, the team boasts a formidable trio capable of bamboozling even the most adept of batters. Their ability to wield control in the middle overs and turn the tide of matches makes them invaluable assets in RR's quest for IPL supremacy.

    Weaknesses

Following the departure of Jason Holder, RR finds itself with limited options in the all-rounder department. With only Ravichandran Ashwin providing a semblance of balance, the team faces challenges in achieving the desired flexibility and depth in its squad composition. While RR boasts quality pace options in Trent Boult and Nandre Burger, concerns linger over the team's ability to contain opposition batsmen. The absence of consistent, economical performers among the remaining pacers raises questions about RR's potency in the death overs, a crucial phase of T20 contests.

    Opportunities

After falling short of expectations in the previous season, RR is eager to reclaim its status as a dominant force in the IPL. With a talented squad brimming with potential, the team is poised to turn the tide and script a memorable chapter in its storied history. As the IPL serves as a gateway to international recognition, RR players have their sights set on securing berths in India's T20 World Cup squad. With standout performers like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson eyeing national selection, IPL 2024 serves as a platform for players to showcase their mettle on the global stage.

    Threats

The form of key players, particularly Jos Buttler and Prasidh Krishna, remains a cause for apprehension. Inconsistent performances could undermine RR's quest for success and undermine their aspirations for IPL glory. While RR's top order sparkles with talent and promise, concerns linger over the stability and reliability of the middle order. Should Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell falter, the burden of anchoring the innings falls on young shoulders like Dhruv Jurel, exposing the team to potential vulnerabilities in crucial match situations.

DC will be looking to improve their performance from last season after they finished in the ninth spot with 10 points. They registered five wins and lost nine games with a negative run rate of 0.808.

Earlier on Tuesday, BCCI gave a major update on Rishabh Pant's recovery from injury and said that the wicketkeeper batsman has been declared fit to take part in the upcoming IPL 2024. He even missed the ICC Cricket World Cup last year at home.

Pant's addition to the squad will definitely boost the Delhi-based franchise's momentum ahead of the upcoming season. Pant has represented DC since 2016 and scored 2,838 runs in 98 matches at an average of 34.61 and a strike rate of over 147, with a century and 15 fifties to his name.

  • KKR Captain Shreyas Iyer Likely To Miss IPL 2024's First Phase Due To Same Back Injury Which Ruled Him Out Of 2023 Season | cricket news

In what could be a huge blow to the hopes of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of Indian Premier League's next season (IPL 2024), captain Shreyas Iyer could miss the few initial games due to back injury. It is the same back injury because of which Iyer had missed the complee IPL 2023. Iyer recently played a knock of 95 runs in the Ranji Trophy final and a report in Times of India says that it is this knock which has led to the injury resurfacing. .

Iyer had undergone a back surgery last year before making a comeback just before the World Cup. He played four months of international cricket before complaining of the back pain again. Confusion remained over why Iyer was not picked in the last 3 Tests squad. India coach Rahul Dravid had said that Iyer had missed out on the selection while the batsman has reportedly told BCCI he had back issues and that was the reason why he did not even play a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai.

Medical team of National Cricket Academy, reportedly, informed BCCI that there was no issue with Iyer. BCCI dropped him from the central contracts post which Iyer was seen playing the final of the Ranji Trophy.

    Let's get started! _ pic.twitter.com/i2l0M9dP8x — KolkataKnightRiders (@KKRiders) February 22, 2024

A BCCI source has been quoted as saying to Times of India that Iyer's injury is not looking good and is in danger of missing the first few games of IPL.

“It is not looking good. It is the same back injury which has got aggravated. It is unlikely that he will take the field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final. He is in danger of missing the initial matches of the IPL,” said the BCCI source.

Not to forget, during his 95-run knock for Mumbai, Iyer took medical assistance twice as he was clearly uncomfortable. He did not take the field for Mumbai on Day 4 and likely to be missing on Day 5 as well due to the same injury.

KKR play their first match of IPL 2024 on March 23 and if Iyer does not reach full fitness in the next 8 days, he is likely to miss the team's opening game. If that happens, it will be interesting to see KKR's stance on this as if Iyer was not completely fit, then how did NCA clear him to play the Ranji final. That is the big question.
