  • Exclusive: Pakistan Eyes Kartarpur Corridor Expansion Ahead Of Agreement Renewal With India | India News

As the first five-year agreement for the Kartarpur Corridor approaches its expiration in early November 2024, Pakistan is reportedly aiming to expand the corridor to include other significant Sikh pilgrimage sites, such as Nankana Sahib, which is about a three-hour drive from Gurdwara. Kartarpur Sahib. The initial agreement, signed in 2019, has facilitated visa-free access for Indian pilgrims to visit the revered Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan’s Narowal district.

The Kartarpur Corridor, inaugurated on November 9, 2019, by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then-Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, allows Indian pilgrims to cross into Pakistan without a visa, although certain conditions apply. Under the current agreement, up to 5,000 Indian pilgrims can visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib daily, with each pilgrim required to pay a service fee of $20. However, the actual number of daily visitors has fallen short of the anticipated 5,000, with fewer than 200 pilgrims visiting on average each day.

    Pakistan’s Proposed Expansion

Ahead of the agreement’s renewal, sources suggest that Pakistan is likely to express interest not only in renewing the corridor but also in expanding its scope to include Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. This initiative would allow pilgrims to visit both Nankana Sahib and Kartarpur Sahib, two of the most sacred places in Sikhism. Additionally, Pakistan is reportedly considering a proposal to allow devotees to stay overnight at Kartarpur Sahib, rather than adhering to the current requirement to return to India by evening.

“I have raised this matter at the highest forum in Pakistan, emphasizing that pilgrims coming from India should be allowed to stay for at least one night so they can have the privilege of listening to Gurbani at Rahras Sahib in the evening and during Amrit Vela, ” said Ramesh Singh Arora, a member of the Provincial Assembly of Pakistan’s Punjab. “At the same time, I urge our Sikh religious bodies, such as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), and the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Committee, to make efforts to facilitate Indian devotees in visiting. Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib,” added Arora.

However, logistical challenges remain. The distance between the two sites and the associated travel requirements could complicate any expansion plans. It is unclear how the proposal might be implemented or whether India would agree to the extended itinerary. Harjinder Singh Dhami, President of the SGPC, has called for not only eliminating the $20 service fee but also scrapping the passport requirement for pilgrims. He noted that many residents of Punjab do not possess passports, which limits their ability to visit the holy site. These demands echo longstanding grievances, as Indian officials have repeatedly raised concerns about the service fee, labeling it an obstacle for pilgrims.

    Service Charge Debate

The $20 service charge imposed by Pakistan has been a contentious issue since the corridor’s inception. Pakistani authorities argue that the fee is necessary to cover operational costs, including shuttle services, free meals (langar), medical facilities, and administrative support provided to the pilgrims. In contrast, Indian leaders have criticized it as a commercial imposition on a spiritual pilgrimage.

Amid growing calls for a reduction or waiver of the service charge, Sikh authorities in Pakistan have suggested revising the fee structure. They have proposed that a collective fee of $20 could be applied to families, rather than charging each individual separately. They also recommended implementing a reduced fee for frequent visitors, subject to approval by the relevant ministries in Pakistan.

Vikramjit Singh Sahney, a member of the Rajya Sabha, recently urged the Indian government to address the fee issue with Pakistan in upcoming negotiations. He highlighted the broader challenges faced by Sikh pilgrims and advocated for measures to ease access to the holy site.

    Significance of the Holy Sites

Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, also known as Kartarpur Sahib, holds a unique place in Sikh history as the final resting place of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who spent the last 18 years of his life there before passing away in 1539. Located roughly five kilometers from the India-Pakistan border, it has long been a beacon of devotion for Sikhs worldwide. Meanwhile, Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak, is another pivotal site in Sikhism, making the proposed expansion of the corridor a potentially monumental development for the community.

    Corridor for Peace

In recent years, Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib has witnessed several family reunions of people separated by the India-Pakistan Partition, who had previously been unable to meet. This is why former Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Ambassador Ajay Basariya, referred to Kartarpur as both a “corridor of faith” and a “corridor for peace” in his public remarks.

    Broader Implications and Diplomatic Hurdles

The expansion proposal comes at a time when India and Pakistan have not engaged in formal bilateral talks for nearly a decade. Renewing the Kartarpur Corridor agreement and addressing concerns such as the service fee could provide an opportunity for limited engagement between the two nations. However, it remains a significant challenge for India to persuade Pakistan to waive the $20 charge, especially in light of the broader diplomatic freeze.

    Financial and Operational Aspects

Pakistan claims to have invested PKR 16.2 billion in the development of the Kartarpur Corridor. The service fee has been justified as a means to recoup some of these expenses, though the issue remains a sore point between the two governments. At the same time, India has not only established the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Dera Baba Nanak, dedicated to the Sri Kartarpur Corridor, but has also invested billions of INR in developing the road network leading up to the ICP. Pakistan, for its part, has constructed a 400-metre-long bridge; however, the final phase of connecting the bridge remains incomplete even after five years.

With the current agreement set to expire, the terms of the renewed pact, including the potential expansion to Nankana Sahib, are likely to be central to discussions. Both sides will have to weigh the religious, logistical, and financial aspects of any changes. As the Kartarpur Corridor enters its next phase, the aspirations for its expansion underscore its symbolic significance and the complex interplay of religion, politics, and diplomacy between India and Pakistan. Whether these aspirations will materialize depends on the willingness of both nations to navigate the challenges and seize the opportunity to foster greater connectivity and understanding.

  • Can India Still Qualify For Women’s T20 World Cup Semi-Finals? Check All Possible Scenarios After Loss To Australia | cricket news

T20 WC 2024: India, captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, suffered a heartbreaking nine-run loss to Australia in a crucial ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday. With Australia already securing their place in the semi-finals, India now finds their own chances of progressing hanging in the balance. The narrow defeat has significantly dented their hopes of reaching the semi-finals, leaving their fate dependent on the outcome of the final group-stage clash between New Zealand and Pakistan.

    Australia Prevails In A Nail-Bitter

Batting first, Australia posted a competitive total of 151/8 in their 20 overs. Despite a disciplined bowling effort from India, Australia’s middle-order batters managed to push their score past the 150-run mark, setting India a tough target. India’s chase started well, with Harmanpreet Kaur leading from the front with a resilient 54, but they faltered under pressure in the final stages of the match. Needing 10 runs off the last over, India could only manage 142/9 in their 20 overs, falling agonizingly short by 9 runs.

Harmanpreet’s innings kept India in the hunt, but with her stranded at the non-striker’s end during the crucial final over, India’s hopes were dashed as wickets tumbled at the other end.

IND vs NZ: Semi-Final Qualification Scenarios

India’s chances of progressing to the semi-finals now hinge on the outcome of New Zealand’s final group-stage match against Pakistan. Here are the scenarios:

New Zealand Win: If New Zealand defeat Pakistan in any manner, India will be knocked out of the tournament, and New Zealand will secure the second semi-final spot.

Pakistan Win Big: If Pakistan manages a resounding victory, surpassing both India and New Zealand’s net run rate (NRR), Pakistan will leapfrog into second place, eliminating India.

Pakistan Win Narrowly: If Pakistan wins but fails to improve their NRR significantly, India, New Zealand, and Pakistan will all be tied with 4 points each. In this case, India, who currently has a higher NRR (+0.322) than New Zealand (+0.282), would progress to the semi-finals.

    India’s Disappointing Journey

India’s World Cup campaign has been filled with ups and downs. After losing their tournament opener against New Zealand by 58 runs, India bounced back with back-to-back wins against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which reignited their semi-final hopes. However, the loss to the defending champions, Australia, has now left India on the brink of elimination.

    Last Hope For India

India’s qualification hopes are now ironically in the hands of their arch-rivals Pakistan. If Pakistan defeats New Zealand on Monday, India stands a chance of making it through to the next stage. A loss for New Zealand would keep India alive in the competition, but anything short of that will bring an end to India’s World Cup journey.

India’s heavy loss to New Zealand and their close win against Pakistan earlier in the tournament have kept their net run rate intact, but they will now be hoping for a favorable result in the final group-stage match to keep their World Cup dream alive.

  • India’s Foreign Exchange Reserves Stay Above $700 Bn | Economy News

India’s foreign exchange (Forex) reserves stood above $700 billion for the second-consecutive week, data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) showed on Friday. The foreign reserves stood at $701.18 billion as of October 4, a drop of $3.71 billion from the previous week, according to the RBI’s weekly bulletin.

The country’s Forex reserves of over $700 billion are at an all-time high and the fourth-largest in the world. Forex rose nearly $35 billion in the earlier seven weeks. As per the Weekly Statistical Supplement released by the RBI, Foreign Currency Assets (FCAs) dropped by $3.51 billion to $612.6 billion.

Gold reserves decreased by $40 million to $65.76 billion. Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) also saw a marginal dip by $123 million to stand at $18.43 billion. The country’s reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) witnessed a marginal decrease of $71 million at $4.3 billion.

Despite geo-political uncertainties, the investors’ confidence remained intact in India’s growth story as last week, the country’s foreign exchange reserves surpassed $700 billion for the first time, reaching $704.89 billion. The Forex surged $12.59 billion, which is the largest weekly rise since mid-July 2023.

The country has joined the ranks of three other countries – China, Japan, and Switzerland – which have crossed the $700 billion threshold in reserves. Foreign inflows into the country this year have crossed $30 billion. Looking ahead, India’s Forex reserves are projected to grow further.

The strong Forex will boost its economic growth trajectory by strengthening its position internationally, drawing in foreign investments, and promoting domestic trade and industry. According to industry experts, strengthened Forex and a strong monetary policy stance are creating confidence among trade and industry and attracting foreign investments amid geopolitical vulnerabilities.

  • World Bank Raises India’s Growth Outlook For FY25 To 7% From 6.6% | Economy News

New Delhi: The World Bank has raised India’s economic growth forecast from 6.6 per cent to 7 per cent for the financial year 2024-25 citing the growth of agriculture output and policies as a major factor contributing to the employment growth in the economy.

“Growth in India is projected to reach 7.0 per cent in FY24/25 with larger-than-expected agricultural output and policies to foster employment growth contributing to strong private consumption growth,” the World Bank added in its South Asia’s Growth forecast report released on October 10.

Many global rating agencies and multilateral organisations have also revised their growth forecasts for India upward. In July, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised India’s growth projections for 2024 from 6.8 per cent to 7 per cent, reinforcing the country’s status as the fastest-growing economy among emerging markets and developing economies.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) in September last month forecasted India’s economic growth at 7 per cent for the financial year FY2024 and 7.2 per cent for FY2025. ADB reiterated that India’s economic growth will remain robust.

ADB, in its September edition of Asian Development Outlook (ADO), highlighted that an above-average monsoon in most parts of the country will lead to strong agricultural growth, enhancing the rural economy in FY2024.

In its earlier revision, the world financing body had attributed robustness and strength in domestic demand and a rising working-age population behind its growth projections. Going further, the global body added that the growth in South Asia is expected to increase to 6.4 percent this year, exceeding earlier projections and keeping the region on track to be the fastest-growing in the world.

Separately, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its monetary policy on October 9, reiterated and projected India’s GDP growth rate for FY25 at 7.2 per cent. According to RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, growth for the fiscal year will be supported by robust quarterly performances.

IND W vs SL W: India bounced back in their 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a crucial six-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan, after suffering a 58-run defeat to New Zealand in their opener. The victory has put India back on track, but their semi-final hopes remain precarious, as any further slip-up could significantly hinder their chances. With the daunting challenge of facing defending champions Australia in their final Group A match, a victory against Sri Lanka in their next game is vital for India’s qualification hopes.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have had a tough tournament so far, despite entering the World Cup on a high after winning their maiden Asia Cup title earlier this year by defeating India in the final. Their campaign has been marred by consecutive defeats, starting with a 31-run loss to Pakistan and followed by a six-wicket loss to Australia. With two defeats in as many games, Sri Lanka are fighting to stay alive in the tournament.

IND W vs SL W: Head To Head

When it comes to head-to-head encounters, India have historically dominated Sri Lanka, holding a commanding 19-5 record. The two teams first met in the 2009 Women’s T20 World Cup, and India have often had the upper hand in their Asian matchups. However, Sri Lanka’s recent win over India in the final of the Women’s Asia Cup in July, where they claimed an emphatic eight-wicket victory, will give them confidence as they look to replicate that success on the global stage.

Both teams will be desperate for a win in this crucial encounter, with India’s quest to secure a semi-final spot and Sri Lanka’s hope to salvage their campaign hanging in the balance.

The Dubai pitch has been slow and challenging for batters throughout the tournament, making run-scoring difficult. With dew not being a major factor, the toss-winning captain’s decision to bat or bowl will likely depend on their preference for setting or chasing a target. Spinners from both sides are expected to excel, as the track has been favorable for spin bowling, posing challenges for the batters.

  • Not Applying For Benefits Under India’s New EV Policy In Short Term: BYD | Auto News

Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD is not ready to apply for benefits in the short term under India’s new EV policy announced earlier this year that seeks to attract global manufacturers to the country, a senior company official said on Tuesday. The company, which launched its new all-electric multipurpose vehicle eMAX 7 priced between Rs 26.9 lakh and Rs 29.9 lakh, is looking at the homologation route in the short term to meet the demands of its high-volume models in India, BYD India Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles Business Rajeev Chauhan said.

“Representatives of our company, who have a good idea about that policy went in, went through that. The final conclusion… is that we have decided that, no, we are not ready to implement this policy in the short term. So, we are not applying,” he said when asked if BYD was looking to apply for benefits under the new EV policy in India.

Chauhan said having a manufacturing plant gives some advantages, but BYD India is not there yet. “We are, I can confidently say that in the short term, we are not doing that,” he said while declining to comment on the challenges due to geopolitics between India and China.

In March this year, the government announced the new electric vehicle policy to attract major global players like Tesla, allowing them to import a limited number of cars at lower customs/import duty of 15 per cent on vehicles costing $35,000 and above for a period of five years from the date of issuance of the approval letter by the government.

Under the policy, the approved applicants will have to set up manufacturing facilities in India with a minimum investment of Rs 4,150 crore ($500 million) for the manufacturing of e-4W (electric four-wheelers) and provide a bank guarantee.

The manufacturing facilities will have to be made operational within a period of 3 years from the date of the issuance of the approval letter by the Ministry of Heavy Industries and achieve a minimum DVA (domestic value addition) of 25 per cent within the same period, and increase it to 50 per cent in five years.

According to the policy, the companies will be allowed to import CBUs of e-4W manufactured by them at a reduced customs duty of 15 per cent, subject to the conditions. The maximum number of e-4W allowed to be imported at the reduced duty rate will be capped at 8,000 units per year. The carryover of unutilised annual import limits would be permitted.

Explaining the short term strategy for BYD India, he said, “We would really explore the market, for the gaps, for the opportunities, and wherever we feel that the opportunity is exceeding the quota, which is set by the government. We are taking the homologation (route) and we are applying for it.”

Homologation is the process of certifying vehicles for roadworthiness under rules specified by the government for all vehicles made or imported into the country through a certified agency.

BYD India is importing its new eMAX 7 and SEAL sedan under the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) vehicle certification. It puts a cap on the total number of vehicles allowed to be imported to 2,500 units.

He further said, “So, the short-term strategy would not call for a manufacturing investment, and for that, we have to wait.”

The forces rely on the Russian Igla missiles for their requirements but have felt the need to modernise their inventory for over a decade now. The development cum production partners in the VSHORADS project are two private companies. Earlier on Friday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, while addressing the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue (IPRD) 2024 in New Delhi, expressed India’s support for a peaceful resolution to disputes and has sought to promote cooperation among nations in the Indo-Pacific.

“India has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to disputes and has sought to promote cooperation among nations in the Indo-Pacific, with a strong emphasis on the centrality of ASEAN in fostering regional dialogue, stability, and collective growth,” he said. Rajnath Singh underscored India’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of vital international maritime routes. He further said that the engagement with regional partners, including joint exercises and information-sharing initiatives, is aimed at strengthening the collective maritime security framework.

He underlined that the Indian Armed Forces, particularly the Navy, have been at the forefront of cooperative endeavours with countries of the region, and are continuously working towards building their capacity and capabilities, the Ministry of Defence stated.”While India’s endeavour for maritime cooperation continues, its interests are not in conflict with any other country.

At the same time, the interests of any other nation should not come in conflict with those of other nations. This is the spirit in which we must work together,” Singh further said.Highlighting India’s vision for the Indo-Pacific he said, “India’s vision for the Indo-Pacific is based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s idea of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) as we believe in fostering partnerships that prioritise sustainable development, economic growth and mutual security.

“The Defence Minister added that India’s engagement with its partners is guided by the understanding that true progress can only be achieved through collective action and synergy. • Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu To Visit India From October 7 | world news

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu is expected to visit India starting on October 7 as per sources.

This will mark Muizzu’s first standalone bilateral visit to the country since assuming office last year.

Recently, on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Muizzu told ANI, that he is planning to visit India as soon as possible. He also praised the “very strong” bilateral relationship between the two countries.”

“I am planning to visit (India) as soon as possible…We have a very strong bilateral relationship,” Muizzu told ANI.

This will notably be the second time that Muizzu is visiting India this year after attending the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this June.

It is pertinent to note that earlier almost every Maldivian President used to make his first foreign visit to India, but Muizzu changed the trend by first visiting Turkiye and then China, after assuming office.

The Mohamed Muizzu government in the Maldives took a conciliatory tone after ties with India soured, leading to a diplomatic row.

Since coming to power, Muizzu has taken several steps that have been unconventional from the point of view of India-Maldives ties. He ran his entire presidential campaign on the lines of ‘India Out’. The removal of Indian troops from the country was the main election campaign of Muizzu’s party.

  • India Expresses Deep Concern, Calls For Civilian Protection Amid Mounting Tensions In Middle East |

Israel-Iran Conflict: Amid the escalating tensions in the Middle East following Iran’s missile attacks on Israel, India on Wednesday expressed deep concerns, saying that the conflict between the two countries must not take a wider regional dimension and called for restraint and protection of civilians.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), in a statement, emphasized that “dialogue and diplomacy” should be channeled to resolve all conflicting issues.

“We are deeply concerned at the escalation of the security situation in West Asia and reiterate our call for restraint by all concerned and protection of civilians. It is important that the conflict doesn’t take a wider regional dimension, and we urge that all issues be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy,” the MEA said in the statement.

The statement from the MEA came a day after Iran fired more than 180 ballistic missiles on Israel. Following the unprecedented attacks by Iran, alarms sounded across Israel, and explosions were heard in Jerusalem and the Jordan River valley.

Earlier, the Indian Embassy in Israel also issued travel advisory for Indians in Israel. “In view of the prevailing situation in the region, all Indian nationals in Israel are advised to stay vigilant and adhere to the safety protocols as advised by the local authorities. Please exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel within the country, and stay close to safety shelters. The Embassy is closely monitoring the situation and remains in regular touch with the Israeli authorities to ensure the safety of all our nationals. In case of any emergency, please contact the 24 x 7 helpline of the Embassy at +972-547520711, +972-543278392,” the Embassy said.

The advisories came after Iran’s missile attack on Israel days after Israeli Defense Forces began their ground operations against Hezbollah in Israel. Israel has said that it will respond to the Iranian attack at a date and time of its choice.

IDF Spokesperson RAdm. Daniel Hagari said, “Iran’s attack is a severe and dangerous escalation. There will be consequences… We will respond wherever, whenever, and however we choose, in accordance with the directive of the government of Israel.”
