  • Om Birla Elected As Speaker Of 18th Lok Sabha Following Voice Vote – KEY HIGHLIGHTS |

    Lok Sabha Speaker Elections: It’s a historical day today with the speaker being elected for the Lok Sabha. In contention are BJP’s Om Birla, three-time MP from Rajasthan’s Kota and the Speaker in the last Lok Sabha and Congress’s eight-term MP from Kerala’s Mavelikara, K Suresh. Follow LIVE Updates:

    – Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav congratulated NDA’s Birla on assuming the Lower House’s speaker chair.

    – After Om Birla was elected as Lok Sabha speaker, Prime Minister Narendra Modi says “Respected Speaker, it is the good fortune of the House that you are occupying this Chair for a second time.”

    – BJP MP Om Birla has been elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha after voice voting. He assumed the speaker’s chair for the second consecutive term.

    – Congress president Mallikarjun said that there hasn’t been a single discussion between opposition and government. Kharge stated, “Election is going to happen that is why we have filed nomination.”

    – Congress MP K Suresh claimed that the INDIA bloc was ‘compelled’ to contest the election as the BJP’s reply was not satisfactory over the issue. 

    He added, “We don’t want to contest the election against the Speaker, but when the government approached INDIA Alliance, especially the Congress party leadership, we asked about the Deputy Speaker post. At that time, we were not given any assurance. Yesterday, too, they didn’t give any assurance by 11.30 am.” Suresh further said that the BJP told us to support the Speaker election first, and then we can talk about the Deputy Speaker. 

    – On the Lok Sabha Speaker election, Union Minister Chirag Paswan told the reporters that the coalition is 100% confident about the victory. He added, “We were prepared to talk about the deputy speaker position, but the manner in which the Opposition attempted to impose conditions on Rajnath Singh’s meetings with them in front of us was inappropriate.”

    – Om Birla, the NDA’s nominee for Speaker of the Lok Sabha has arrived at Parliament.

    – Prime Minister Narendra Modi will move the motion in the Lok Sabha that BJP’s Om Birla should be chosen as the speaker of the house. This is the first time in many years that there will be an election for the Lok Sabha Speaker’s position.

    – The BJP and Congress have issued a three-line whip, instructing all their MPs to be present in the House from 11 a.m. onward, today (June 26). 

    – The number of MPs in attendance and participating will be considered when casting votes for the Speaker position. The Speaker will be chosen by the majority. With 293 members in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the opposition INDIA group has 234 MPs, while the NDA has a decisive majority of 293 MPs. 

    – While talking to the media on the Lok Sabha Speaker election, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told ANI, “We all are colleagues in the House and we have to work together. When we give an offer to them (Opposition), we expect that the offer is accepted gracefully but that has not been done. We will appeal to them again. There is a simple thing to elect the Speaker unanimously.”

    – 535 MPs Will Vote Today: Out of a total strength of 543 Member of Parliaments in the 18th Lok Sabha, 535 MPs will vote today.

    – Shashi Tharoor, Shatrughan Sinha To Sit Out Voting: Prominent leaders such as Congress’s Shashi Tharoor and Trinamool Congress’s actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha. Additionally, there are others like Deepak Adhikari and Nurul Islam from Trinamool Congress, Afzhal Ansari from the Samajwadi Party, and two Independents. The reasons for the delayed oath-taking of these leaders remain undisclosed. 

    – Congress’s Kodikunnil Suresh will compete against the BJP’s Om Birla for the position of Speaker in the 18th Lok Sabha. The need for a vote arose due to the inability of the Centre and the opposition to agree on a candidate. This marks the first contested election for the Speaker’s role since 1952.

    – Om Birla, a three-time MP from Kota, Rajasthan, and the former Speaker of the previous Lok Sabha, is the BJP’s nominee. Meanwhile, Kodikunnil Suresh, an eight-term MP from Mavelikara, Kerala, has been chosen by the Congress for the position.

  • Lok Sabha Live Updates: NDA Vs Opposition On Speaker Post, Om Birla Vs K Suresh| Updates |

    Lok Sabha Speaker Election: Kota MP Om Birla, who previously served as Lok Sabha Speaker of the previous House, submitted his nomination as an NDA candidate on Tuesday. Birla’s name was unanimously agreed upon by all NDA parties, and senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh also sought the opposition’s support. The INDIA bloc fielded Congress leader K Suresh as its candidate for the Speaker’s position against Om Birla, accusing the ruling NDA of failing to follow convention in handing over the Dy speaker position to the opposition.

    Congress leader K C Venugopal and DMK’s T R Baalu walked out of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s office, refusing to endorse NDA candidate Birla unless they were offered the position of Deputy Speaker. Venugopal stated that the BJP refused to commit to offering the Deputy Speaker position to the opposition.

    Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Lalan Singh accused the Congress of imposing conditions, adding that the ruling alliance was willing to discuss their demand when the election for Deputy Speaker took place.

    According to sources, over ten sets of nominations were filed in support of Birla’s candidature, including those from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers Shah, Singh, and Nadda, as well as BJP allies such as the TDP, JD(U), JD(S), and LJP(R).

    Three nominations were submitted in support of Suresh, a Dalit leader and eight-term MP.

    Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had clarified on Tuesday that the INDIA bloc will only support the government’s nomination if the opposition is given the deputy speaker’s position. He also said that Defence Minister and senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh had yet to respond to the opposition’s request for the post of deputy speaker. Gandhi also accused the BJP of insulting Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge. 

    While speaking to reporters outside the Parliament house, Gandhi said, “Today it is written in the newspaper that PM Modi has said that the Opposition should cooperate with the Govt constructively. Rajnath Singh called Mallikarjun Kharge and he asked him to extend support to the Speaker. The entire Opposition said that we would support the Speaker but the convention is that the Deputy Speaker post should be given to the opposition.”

    “Rajnath Singh said that he would call back Mallikarjun Kharge but he has not done that yet…PM Modi is asking for cooperation from Opposition but our leader is getting insulted…,” he said.

  • 18th Lok Sabha Inaugural Session To Witness Fireworks Over Speaker Election, NEET Row |

    Monday marks the start of the 18th Lok Sabha’s first session, during which freshly elected members of parliament, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will take the oath of office. The opposition is likely to corner the BJP-led NDA government on the June 26 Speaker election, debates about alleged paper leaks in NEET-UG and UGC-NET, and a dispute over the pro-tem Speaker’s appointment, therefore the first session is expected to be turbulent.

    Bhartruhari Mahtab, a legislator from the Bharatiya Janata Party, will take the oath of office as the acting Speaker of the Lok Sabha from President Droupadi Murmu. Mahtab will next ask Leader of the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to swear in as a member of the House. 

    The Lok Sabha Speaker will be chosen on June 26. The address of President Droupadi Murmu to the joint session of both houses of Parliament is set for June 27.

    The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 293 seats, the INDIA bloc won 234 seats, and the Congress held 99 seats. This is the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha following the general elections.
    In the meantime, a meeting of the newly elected Congress MPs has been arranged for today at 10 a.m. at the CPP office in Parliament.

    NEET Row To Shadow The Proceedings

    After the alleged irregularities in the medical entrance examination National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate 2024 (NEET-UG), Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi targeted the BJP and said that they stand with the students.

    The row over the appointment of BJP leader Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro-tem Speaker is expected to shadow the proceedings as opposition claimed that Congress Member K Suresh, who is the senior most member was disregarded by the government.

    Meanwhile, BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab, who has been appointed as the pro-tem Speaker, will administer the oath to newly elected members and oversee the proceedings of the House.

    The Congress has reacted sharply to the central government’s decision to appoint seven-term BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab as Pro-tem Speaker of Lok Sabha over senior-most Dalit MP Kodikkunnil Suresh of Congress, saying that the appointment by the BJP deviates from the traditional practice of appointing the senior member.

    Congress leader K Suresh said that there is an eighth-term MP in the House, but a seventh-term MP has been appointed as pro-tem Speaker.
