The Indian cricket team has been undergoing a period of transition, particularly in terms of leadership. Following the recent changes in Test cricket, the captaincy of the One Day International (ODI) format has also been passed on. Shubman Gill, an experienced batsman, is now leading India in both Test and ODI teams. While Gill has been given this opportunity, the desire to take on a leadership role is shared by many players within the Indian team. One such player is Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is working towards his goal of captaining a team.

Yashasvi Jaiswal made his debut in international cricket just two years ago, and his performances have quickly earned him a place in the team. He is now a key part of the Indian Test team, and is a regular player in the starting eleven. There is a growing demand for him to become a regular member of the ODI and T20 teams, and Jaiswal is deserving of these opportunities. However, the young batsman has even bigger ambitions.

In a recent YouTube podcast, the 23-year-old batsman, Jaiswal, discussed his ambitions and the preparations he is undertaking. Speaking with Raj Shamani, the left-handed opener said, “I work on myself every day to become a better leader. I want to be a captain one day.” Jaiswal did not explicitly mention aiming for the captaincy of the Indian team, but his ultimate goal is evident. He also expressed his desire to captain in the IPL.

This is not the first time Jaiswal has indicated an interest in captaincy. Some months ago, Jaiswal left his Mumbai Cricket Association to join Goa Cricket, where preparations were being made to name him captain. However, he changed his mind at the last minute.

In addition, there were speculations surrounding leadership within the Rajasthan Royals during the IPL 2025 season. It was revealed that a section of the franchise favored Jaiswal as captain, but the role was eventually given to Riyan Parag. Rumors of Jaiswal’s displeasure also surfaced during this time. It’s clear that Yashasvi Jaiswal has high aspirations, and his commitment suggests he will realize them.
