Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel has voiced his support for veteran batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma potentially featuring in the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, citing their invaluable experience as a significant asset. This perspective emerges amid widespread speculation regarding the long-term international careers of both players, especially following their recent retirement from Test matches.

With both cricketers having stepped back from T20 internationals after the previous World Cup, queries about their inclusion in India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup persist. Morkel, however, firmly believes in the benefits of their continued presence. “They are undoubtedly quality players,” Morkel remarked at a press conference. “Provided they remain dedicated to hard work and maintaining peak physical condition, their experience is irreplaceable. They possess a history of winning and a deep understanding of how to perform in major tournaments.”

He elaborated, “Absolutely, if they maintain their fitness levels and feel their bodies can withstand the demands, the World Cup is still quite some time in the future.” Addressing the team’s recent Test series setback, Morkel highlighted the need for a swift transition to white-ball focus. “The last couple of weeks were disappointing. However, we’ve taken time to reflect, and our energy must now be directed towards our white-ball commitments. We’ve been performing well in that format, and the return of Virat and Rohit would bring renewed energy. We’re looking forward to the upcoming white-ball fixtures.”

Morkel also shared encouraging news about the recovery of Shubman Gill, who is recuperating from a neck spasm, and Shreyas Iyer, who has begun his rehabilitation from a more substantial injury.
