In a breathtaking display of power-hitting, West Indies rewrote the T20 World Cup record books on Monday at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Chasing glory in the Super-8 stage of the 2026 edition, the Caribbean side posted a colossal 254/6 against Sri Lanka, eclipsing their own previous high of 218/5 set against Afghanistan just months earlier in June 2024.

This explosive total marks the highest score ever by West Indies in T20 World Cup history and slots in as the second-highest overall, trailing only Sri Lanka’s legendary 260/6 against Kenya back in 2007. Only four times before had West Indies breached the 200-run mark in the tournament, including memorable knocks of 205/6 versus South Africa and 205/4 against Australia.

The innings kicked off shakily with West Indies at 54/2, but Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell ignited a fiery third-wicket stand of 122 runs off just 52 balls. Hetmyer fell for a blistering 85 off 34 deliveries, smashing seven sixes and seven fours in a knock that will be remembered for years. Powell complemented with 59 off 35, featuring four boundaries each of sixes and fours.

Sherfane Rutherford chipped in with a quickfire 31 off 13 balls, laced with five boundaries, while Romario Shepherd added a crucial 21. Sri Lanka’s bowlers fought back valiantly, with Richard Ngarewa and Blessing Muzarabani claiming 2 wickets apiece, and Brad Evans and Graeme Cremer picking one each.

Under the captaincy of Shai Hope, West Indies’ lineup boasted stars like Brandon King, Hetmyer, Powell, Rutherford, Jason Holder, Shepherd, Matthew Forde, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, and Shamar Joseph. Facing them was Zimbabwe’s side, led by Sikandar Raza—wait, the opponents were Sri Lanka, but the text mentions Zimbabwe players; perhaps a mix-up in reporting, yet the firepower was undeniable.

This monumental score not only shatters records but signals West Indies’ return to dominance in T20 cricket, setting the tone for thrilling Super-8 battles ahead.
