Head coach Amol Muzumdar has shed light on the rationale behind Vaishnavi Sharma’s selection for India’s T20 International series against Sri Lanka. He confirmed that the Amita Sharma-led selection committee recognized her stellar domestic performances, which played a pivotal role in her inclusion.
Sharma, a promising left-arm spinner, has already made a significant impact. Following her T20I debut, she delivered a strong performance in the second match, showcasing her potential. Her journey to the national side is closely linked to her success with the U-19 team, which clinched the World Cup earlier this year, with Sharma leading the bowling charts.
“Credit to her that she comes from the under-19s. Her exploits in the under-19 were probably rewarded, and also her domestic performance. I would like to stress here that domestic performance was rewarded by the selectors,” Muzumdar reiterated. Her domestic credentials are exceptionally strong, boasting 21 wickets in the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy and a tournament-leading 12 wickets in the Senior Women’s Inter Zonal T20s.
Despite being overlooked in the WPL 2026 auction, Sharma has shown remarkable composure and skill against Sri Lanka. Coach Muzumdar praised her control and temperament. “The control that she has shown, not just in her skills but also in her mental control, is out there. She’s calm, collective. As I said, she looks promising,” he remarked.
With the 2026 T20 World Cup on the horizon, Muzumdar emphasized the team’s focus on achieving a settled combination. “We try to be as settled as possible,” he said, highlighting the team’s strategic approach to preparation for the major tournament.
The Indian team is actively working on improving all aspects of their play, including batting, bowling, fielding, and fitness. Muzumdar stated, “We consistently speak about improving all three facets of the game, not just fielding. In fact, there is a fourth one now, which is fitness.”
Muzumdar also noted a positive change in the team’s atmosphere post the ODI World Cup victory, describing the players as happier and more energetic. He also acknowledged Sri Lanka as a formidable opponent, treating them with due respect in the ongoing series.
