Colombo, February 21: Pakistan’s rising off-spinner Usman Tariq is basking in the glow of unexpected acclaim from cricket legends following his stellar show in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. With a distinctive slinging bowling action honed on tennis balls in domestic circuits, Tariq has claimed 10 wickets across four matches, turning heads and setting the stage for more drama at R. Premadasa Stadium against New Zealand.
Speaking to broadcasters, the young spinner expressed genuine surprise at the hype. ‘I never expected such praise and excitement from all the legends and you guys (commentators),’ he said. ‘I’m truly enjoying every moment and my performance. I’m eager to bring even more energy and passion.’
Tariq’s journey to international spotlight began on local fields, where he perfected his unorthodox style playing tennis ball cricket. ‘This action developed when I was bowling with tennis balls,’ he revealed. ‘If you watch it in slow motion, you’ll see the timing is still there, but I’m moving slowly. I just try to break down the fractions of my bowling action. It’s working for me just like that.’
As Pakistan eyes Super-8 qualification, Tariq hinted at a strategic blueprint for their spinners. ‘We have a plan, and we’ll try to execute it,’ he noted. ‘If there’s something in the wicket for spinners, it will definitely help us carry out our plan. This is another match, and we’re really focused on winning it. Winning the first game of this round would be a great start.’
Never one to shy away from personal flair, Tariq’s trademark headband has become synonymous with his identity. ‘Absolutely – sometimes my hair comes into my eyes and distracts me, so I wear the headband,’ he laughed. ‘Since people have liked it so much, I want to keep wearing it, even with short hair.’
With New Zealand up next, Tariq’s blend of skill, strategy, and showmanship promises to keep fans on the edge of their seats in this high-stakes T20 showdown.
