Kolkata erupted into cricket frenzy on Sunday as West Indies posted a formidable 195/4 against India in a crucial Super 8 clash of the T20 World Cup 2026 at Eden Gardens. The winner here books a semi-final spot, piling immense pressure on Suryakumar Yadav’s men to chase down 196.

Losing the toss meant West Indies batted first, and they roared out of the blocks. Captain Shai Hope and Roston Chase forged a solid 68-run opening stand in just 8.5 overs. Hope anchored with 32 off 33 balls before departing, while Chase blazed 40 off 25, setting an aggressive tone.

Shimron Hetmyer promised fireworks with 27 off 12 but fell short of a big score. Sherfane Rutherford managed only 14 off 9, falling to Hardik Pandya’s medium pace. The game-changer came via Rovman Powell and Jason Holder, who stitched a blistering 76-run partnership off 35 balls for the fifth wicket.

Powell unleashed havoc, smashing 34 not out off 19 balls at a strike rate of 178, while Holder remained unbeaten on 37 off 22, peppering the ropes with 2 fours and 3 sixes. This late surge propelled West Indies to a challenging total.

India’s bowlers toiled hard, with Jasprit Bumrah leading the charge: 2/36 in 4 overs. Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakaravarthy chipped in with one wicket each. Unchanged from their last outing, India’s XI featured Suryakumar Yadav (c), Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Bumrah.

West Indies, led by Shai Hope, brought in Akeal Hosein for Brandon King, fielding Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Jason Holder, Matthew Forde, Gudakesh Motie, and Shamar Joseph.

As India steps in to chase, the Eden Gardens crowd awaits a classic run-fest. Can the hosts seal semi-final glory, or will West Indies’ firepower prevail? The tension is palpable.
