In a major boost for Australia ahead of their crucial Group B encounter in the 2026 T20 World Cup, former captain Steve Smith has been officially added to the squad. The match against Sri Lanka is set to unfold at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Candy on Monday evening at 7 PM local time.
Smith steps in as a replacement for fast bowler Josh Hazlewood. He was initially brought in as cover for captain Mitchell Marsh, who suffered an injury during nets practice and missed the opening two games. Smith’s inclusion comes at a pivotal moment, with uncertainties surrounding Marsh and Marcus Stoinis.
The veteran batsman trained with the team on Sunday in Candy and is now available for selection. Selector Tony Dodemaide explained the decision aligns with ICC regulations, which require squad changes at least a day before the match. ‘With Steve here and some uncertainty around Mitch and Stoinis, it makes sense for him to be active and ready if needed,’ Dodemaide stated.
While Smith is unlikely to feature in the playing XI against Sri Lanka, especially if Marsh returns to open the innings, his presence offers vital depth. Should Marsh be ruled out, Smith’s spot becomes highly probable. This would mark Smith’s first T20I for Australia since February 2024.
Smith’s recent form in the Big Bash League has been outstanding, fueling speculation about his World Cup involvement. Across 67 T20Is and 55 innings, he has amassed 1,094 runs, including five half-centuries. Australia cannot afford a loss here, as it could spell elimination from the tournament. Fans are watching closely to see if the seasoned campaigner gets his chance.
