Colombo is buzzing with cricket anticipation as Sri Lanka unveils its 17-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England. In a bold leadership move, Charith Asalanka has been appointed captain, stepping up after being removed from T20I duties ahead of the 2026 World Cup. This home series marks a crucial test for the Islanders’ revival in the 50-over format.

Returning to the fold are seasoned campaigners Dhananjaya de Silva and Dushmantha Chameera, who had been absent from recent ODI lineups. Fourteen players from the Pakistan series retain their spots, signaling continuity amid strategic tweaks. The batting lineup boasts Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Kamil Mishara, Sadeera Samarawickrama, and Kamindu Mendis, with Zenith Liyanage adding middle-order firepower.

Bowling balance is a highlight, blending pace and spin effectively. Asitha Fernando, Pramod Madushan, and Ishan Maling lead the pacers, while Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, and Dunith Wellalage form a potent spin attack. This mix aims to exploit home conditions at the R. Premadasa Stadium.

The series kicks off on January 22, followed by games on January 24 and 27, all in Colombo. Post-ODIs, a three-match T20I series awaits from January 30 to February 3 at Pallekele International Stadium. Historically, Sri Lanka and England are neck-and-neck in ODIs, with England holding a slight 38-37 edge from 79 encounters, including ties and no-results.

Despite recent struggles, Sri Lanka’s home record demands respect. Asalanka’s squad blends experience and youth, setting the stage for a fiercely contested battle. Fans can expect spin wizardry, explosive batting, and tactical duels that could redefine both teams’ ODI trajectories.
