Sports Budget 2024: Sports Ministry got Rs 3442 crore in the Union Budget, out of which only Rs 900 crore was allocated to Khelo India, know the details

Sports Budget 2024: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday presented the first interim budget of Modi Government 3.0 in Parliament. To promote sports at the grassroots level, this time the budget has been increased by Rs 45.36 crore compared to the previous sports budget. In the last budget, Rs 3,396 crore was allocated for sports. This time the Finance Minister has allocated a budget of Rs 3,442.32 crore for sports. Out of this amount, Rs 900 crore has been allocated for Khelo India. This amount is Rs 20 crore more than the revised allocation of Rs 880 crore during the last financial year. This budget will give impetus to the Sports Ministry’s campaign to improve sports and provide better facilities to the players.

Let us tell you that the government has invested heavily in Khelo India in the last few years as this program works to bring out talent from all parts of the country. The actual allocation of Khelo India in the financial year 2022-23 was Rs 596.39 crore. In the budget for the next year (2023-24), it was increased to Rs 1,000 crore. However, it was revised to Rs 880 crore.

Khelo India athletes are included in India’s Olympic team

Since the launch of Khelo India Youth Games 2018, the government has added more sporting events to it. The ministry launched Khelo India Winter Games (2018), Khelo India University Games (2020), and Khelo India Para Games (2023). Hundreds of Khelo India State of Excellence Centres have been set up across the country, providing facilities to talented sportspersons. Several Khelo India athletes are currently part of the Indian Olympic contingent.

The budget of Sports Authority of India also increased

Government assistance to National Sports Federations has been increased by Rs 15 crore, from Rs 325 crore to Rs 340 crore in 2023-24. The budget of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has also been increased from Rs 795.77 crore to Rs 822.60 crore, a jump of Rs 26.83 crore. Apart from maintaining its stadiums, SAI also manages the Target Olympic Podium Scheme. The budget of the National Anti-Doping Agency NADA has also increased. Earlier the budget of NADA was Rs 21.73 crore, which has now increased to Rs 22.30 crore.

What is missing here?

The budget of the National Sports Development Fund has been reduced from Rs 46 crore to Rs 18 crore. The incentives given to players have also declined, from Rs 84 crore to Rs 39 crore. The budget of the National Centre of Sports Science has been reduced from Rs 10 crore to Rs 8 crore. The budget for sports facilities in Jammu and Kashmir has also been cut, from Rs 20 crore to Rs 8 crore.
