Johannesburg’s cricket scene is buzzing with major updates ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. South African batter Tony de Zorzi and all-rounder Donovan Ferreira have been ruled out of the marquee tournament due to nagging injuries. Their absence extends to the upcoming three-match T20 series against West Indies, dealing a blow to the Proteas’ preparations.
In a swift response, Cricket South Africa has named wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton and batting all-rounder Tristan Stubbs as replacements in the 15-member squad. This reshuffle comes at a critical juncture as the team gears up for the global showdown co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
South Africa’s campaign kicks off on February 9 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad against Canada, placed in Group D alongside Afghanistan, New Zealand, and UAE. The squad departs for India on February 1, with captain Aiden Markram set to lead the charge.
De Zorzi’s right hamstring injury, sustained during last month’s ODI series against India, has proven too stubborn to heal in time. Ferreira suffered a fractured left collarbone on January 17 during an SA20 clash between Joburg Super Kings and Pretoria Capitals. Adding to the injury woes, veteran left-hander David Miller is sidelined for the West Indies series with an adductor injury picked up playing for Paarl Royals. His World Cup participation hinges on fitness tests, with Rubin Hermann stepping in for the series.
On a brighter note, pace bowler Lungi Ngidi is expected to recover from his leg issue in time for the World Cup. Dewald Brevis, who smashed a match-winning 75 despite a finger injury, awaits scan results. The Proteas assemble in Paarl on January 23, with SA20 knockout players joining on January 26, ahead of the West Indies series starting January 27.
This squad overhaul underscores the resilience of South African cricket, blending experience with emerging talent as they eye glory in the T20 spectacle.
