The cricketing world is preparing to bid farewell to Sophie Devine in the ODI format after the 2025 World Cup. Despite this, her influence will persist in the realm of T20 cricket, where her leadership and aggressive style will remain visible.

“It feels like the right time for me to start stepping away,” Devine commented. She added, “I feel very fortunate to have NZC’s support in finding a solution that means I can still give to the White Ferns.”

Devine reinforced her commitment: “It’s important that everyone knows I’m focused and dedicated to giving this group everything I can before I step away.” She also expressed her excitement for the team’s progress and her role in the next few months.

The seasoned all-rounder, aged 35, will retire from ODIs after the upcoming 50-over World Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka later this year. She has secured a flexible playing contract with New Zealand Cricket to continue in the T20 format. Her retirement announcement occurs as New Zealand prepares to release its central contract list for women’s cricket, excluding Devine, who will focus on T20s. She will remain captain during the World Cup campaign, paving the way for a new captain for the upcoming ODI matches, commencing with New Zealand’s home summer.
