New Delhi's cricket fraternity witnessed a momentous occasion as Shubman Gill, the captain of India's ODI and Test teams, received the prestigious Polly Umrigar Award for Best International Cricketer (Men) at the BCCI's Naman Awards. This recognition places him among the elite legends of the game who have previously claimed this honor.
Gill, expressing profound gratitude, highlighted the significance of sharing this pedestal with cricketing icons he admires. In a video shared by BCCI on X, he stated, 'Being recognized alongside those legends and idols who won this award before me feels incredible. It's truly a massive honor to represent your country every time you step onto the field, perform well in that sport, and receive acknowledgment from BCCI.'
Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Gill reminisced about last year's England Test series. 'It's been an outstanding ride so far. Heading to England, drawing the series from where we were after the first Test, and then playing in the West Indies and Asia Cup – it has truly been a fantastic year,' he added.
His stellar performance in the England series was pivotal, amassing 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40, including four centuries with a highest score of 269. In 2025, Gill topped the Test run charts with 983 runs in nine matches at 70.21, solidifying his dominance.
Looking ahead, Gill emphasized crucial upcoming series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia to bolster India's chances in the World Test Championship final. Currently sixth with four wins and one draw in nine matches, the team needs a string of victories.
He credited the support staff, including head coach Gautam Gambhir and the extensive coaching unit at the Centre of Excellence, for transforming India into a fearless outfit. Gill also praised BCCI and ICC Chairman Jay Shah for their unwavering support, especially during his injury recovery, which facilitated top-notch training and facilities.
'We want to be seen as a red-ball team that never gives up easily. We're instilling that character in all our players,' Gill concluded, outlining his vision for the team's future.
