Dhaka’s cricket circles are buzzing with urgency as Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto makes a heartfelt plea to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). In a pressing press conference following a BPL match, Shanto called for unwavering commitment to stabilize cricket in the country, especially with clouds hanging over Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Shanto didn’t mince words. ‘As a player, I’ve seen the off-field chaos over the past couple of years inflict serious damage on our game,’ he stated firmly. He urged those in authority to unite, forge solutions, and ensure cricket’s continuity. Without solid governance and a clear roadmap, he warned, uncertainty will erode both players’ morale and the sport’s growth.

The captain went further, emphasizing the need for robust domestic tournaments if international doors close. ‘If we miss the World Cup, BCB must step up with well-organized local leagues,’ Shanto insisted. He highlighted the shortcomings in previous Dhaka Premier League editions, pushing for smoother operations and higher standards to keep players competitive.

This appeal underscores a critical divide: on-field excellence versus off-field turmoil. Shanto stressed separating the two to safeguard Bangladesh cricket’s progress. The BCB’s boycott of the 2026 T20 World Cup—sparked by ICC’s refusal to shift matches from India to Sri Lanka—has put the team at risk of replacement by Scotland and potential disciplinary actions. Shanto’s words echo the cricket fraternity’s demand for accountable leadership to steer the sport back on track.
