New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner expressed immense satisfaction after his team’s commanding nine-wicket victory over South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal at Eden Gardens. The Black Caps chased down a target of 170 with ease, thanks to explosive opening stand between Finn Allen and Tim Seifert.
Santner, speaking post-match, highlighted the significance of the performance. ‘Winning this match feels great. When you consider South Africa’s strength, delivering like this in a crucial game is truly satisfying,’ he said.
South Africa, batting first, managed 169 for eight. New Zealand’s bowlers struck early, with Cole McConchie claiming two wickets in his first over during the powerplay. This put immediate pressure on the Proteas.
The captain praised the planned strategy. ‘We had a set plan for the first two overs, then gave the bowlers freedom. Knowing Dewald Brevis prefers spin, we kept the ball away from him effectively,’ Santner explained.
In reply, Finn Allen smashed an unbeaten century off just 33 balls, including 10 fours and 8 sixes. Tim Seifert complemented with 58 not out from 33 balls, featuring 7 fours and 2 sixes. Their 117-run partnership sealed a clinical win.
Reflecting on recent form, Santner noted the Super 8 loss to England but emphasized learning from setbacks. ‘Every loss teaches something. Today, we focused on sustained pressure through regular wickets,’ he added.
New Zealand now awaits the final opponent on March 8 at Narendra Modi Stadium. ‘If we repeat this, it’ll be fantastic. Different pitches bring challenges, but this was an all-round brilliant display,’ Santner concluded.
