Hyderabad is set to host a high-stakes battle as Hockey India announced the 20-member squad for the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2026 Qualifier on Sunday. Veteran midfielder Salima Tete will lead the Indian team in this crucial tournament, scheduled from March 8 to 14 in Telangana’s vibrant capital.

India, playing on home soil, faces fierce competition from England, Scotland, Korea, Italy, Uruguay, Wales, and Austria. All teams are vying for three coveted spots in the World Cup to be held in Belgium and Netherlands next year. The draw has placed the teams into two pools: Pool A features England, Korea, Italy, and Austria, while Pool B includes hosts India alongside Scotland, Uruguay, and Wales.

The defensive line-up boasts experienced players like Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Nikki Pradhan, Manisha Chauhan, Udita, and Ishika Chaudhary. Goalkeeping duties will be shared by Bansari Solanki and Bichu Devi Kharibam. In midfield, captain Salima Tete will be supported by Neha, Sunita Toppo, Sakshi Rana, Vaishnavi Vitthal Falke, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, and Deepika Soreng.

The forward line promises explosive attacks with Navneet Kaur, Ishika, Lalremsiami, Beauty Dungdung, Baljeet Kaur, and Annu. This blend of youth and experience positions India strongly for success.

Newly appointed coach Shourd Marin expressed optimism, stating, ‘We’re eagerly awaiting our first tournament together. We’ve focused on fitness and strategy to ensure everyone understands their roles. We’ll play two practice matches in Hyderabad to gear up fully for the challenges ahead.’

India kicks off their campaign against Uruguay on March 8, followed by clashes with Scotland on March 9 and Wales on March 11. Fans are buzzing with anticipation as the team aims to secure qualification and continue their upward trajectory in international hockey.

With home advantage and a motivated squad, Salima Tete’s leadership could be the key to punching India’s ticket to the World Cup stage.
