In a bold move shaking up the IPL landscape, Rajasthan Royals have appointed 24-year-old Riyan Parag as their captain for the 2026 season. The announcement comes hot on the heels of Sanju Samson’s trade to Chennai Super Kings ahead of the auction, marking the end of his four-year stint leading the franchise.
Rajasthan Royals, champions in 2008, have seen seven captains at the helm since their inception. Despite just one title, they’ve reached the knockouts six times, with leadership roles filled exclusively by Australians and Indians—a unique streak in IPL history.
Parag isn’t new to the pressures of captaincy. Last season in IPL 2025, he stepped in as stand-in skipper, becoming the youngest-ever captain for RR and the fifth youngest in IPL annals when he led the side against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23. Over eight matches, he secured two wins amid six losses, showing promise in a tough role.
Now, Parag takes on full-time duties for 2026, following a storied line of leaders. It all began with the late Shane Warne, who masterminded the 2008 triumph with a young squad, winning 31 of 56 games from 2008-2011.
Rahul Dravid took over in 2012, guiding RR to third place in 2013 and the Champions League final, triumphing in 23 of 40 matches. Shane Watson steered them to playoffs in 2015, Ajinkya Rahane landed fourth in 2018, and Steve Smith notched 15 wins from 27 games.
Sanju Samson, RR’s most successful captain statistically, led in 67 matches with 33 victories, including a dream run to the 2022 final. His departure opens the door for Parag to etch his name in Royals folklore, blending youth with the franchise’s winning legacy.
