MADRID – Real Madrid’s quest for another UEFA Champions League triumph has hit a major snag. Star forward Kylian Mbappe, the team’s leading goal-scorer, is highly unlikely to feature in the crucial Round of 16 clash against Manchester City due to a persistent knee injury. Coach Alvaro Arbeloa confirmed the worrying update, emphasizing the club’s priority on the Frenchman’s full recovery.

Mbappe has been battling issues with his left knee since before Christmas. To safeguard his health, Real Madrid rested him for several key games, including the loss to Manchester City in December, the Spanish Super Cup semi-final, and last month’s La Liga victory over Real Sociedad. Arbeloa, speaking to the media, stressed a day-by-day approach to Mbappe’s rehabilitation.

“We’re monitoring his recovery closely, but it’s too early to set a timeline,” Arbeloa said. “Our goal is for him to return at 100% fitness without any risk of setbacks.” He dismissed rumors that players might be conserving energy for the upcoming World Cup, insisting on full commitment to club duties.

“When I played, I always gave 100% for club and country,” the former Spain international added. “The best way to prepare for a World Cup is by performing at your peak for your team right now.”

The injury comes at a tense time for Real Madrid, who trail FC Barcelona by four points in La Liga after Barca’s 4-1 thrashing of Villarreal. Upcoming fixtures include Getafe, Celta Vigo, and Elche before the Manchester City return leg on March 17. With Santiago Bernabeu hosting the first leg on March 11, fans are bracing for a potential Mbappe-less battle against Pep Guardiola’s juggernaut.

Real Madrid’s depth will be tested, but Arbeloa remains optimistic. The 15-time Champions League winners have a history of rising to the occasion, even without their talisman. As the pressure mounts, all eyes are on Mbappe’s recovery timeline and how the squad adapts to this significant blow.
