In a heartfelt tribute to fallen heroes, the Poonch district police in Jammu and Kashmir organized the inaugural Police Martyrs Volleyball Tournament. The event culminated on Tuesday with Manjeet Singh Memorial Volleyball Club dominating the finals, securing a clean 3-0 sweep against Shaheed Mumtaz Memorial Club.
SSP Shafqat Hussain graced the occasion, personally honoring the players with awards and words of encouragement. Speaking to the media, he highlighted the untapped potential among Poonch’s youth. ‘This region boasts talented youngsters who have shone on national and international stages,’ he said. ‘I commend our local athletes for their dedication to sports.’
The SSP extended hearty congratulations to the champions and praised the runners-up for their spirited performance. ‘Manjeet Singh Memorial Club played brilliantly to claim victory. Shaheed Mumtaz Memorial Club fought valiantly all the way. I am confident these players will soon represent India proudly on global courts.’
Organizing committee head Mohammad Tariq Khan emphasized the tournament’s dual purpose: commemorating police martyrs and steering youth away from vices like drugs. ‘Through sports, we’re honoring our shaheeds and urging the younger generation to embrace healthy pursuits,’ he stated. ‘We want our youth to contribute positively to society.’
Player Ayaz Ahmad Madni lauded the police initiative as a game-changer for border district sports. ‘Opportunities like this are rare here due to funding shortages,’ he noted. ‘This event sends a strong message against narcotics and motivates us to excel. I urge all young people to join such efforts and bring glory to Poonch.’
The tournament not only fostered athletic excellence but also reinforced community bonds in this sensitive border area, promising a brighter future for local sports talent.
