New Delhi witnessed a moment of sporting diplomacy on Monday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared the stage with his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney at the India-Canada CEO Forum. In a gesture that bridged cricket and bilateral ties, PM Modi expressed immense joy at seeing Canada’s cricket team compete in the ongoing T20 World Cup hosted in India.
The remarks came amid efforts to mend strained relations between the two nations, following the 2023 diplomatic row over Khalistani separatist activities. PM Modi drew parallels between the fast-paced T20 format and the potential for India-Canada collaboration, highlighting quick decisions, bold strokes, and match-winning partnerships.
“Some of you must be watching cricket. We were all thrilled to see Canada playing in the T20 World Cup here in India,” PM Modi said. “Just like T20 cricket, with swift decisions, fearless strokes, and game-changing partnerships, India and Canada will shape the future together. I invite you all to join India’s journey of development.”
Canada’s participation marked their second appearance in the T20 World Cup. Placed in a challenging Group D alongside powerhouses like South Africa, New Zealand, Afghanistan, and the UAE, the team faced a tough campaign. They suffered a 57-run defeat to South Africa in their opener, followed by a hard-fought five-wicket win over UAE.
However, losses to New Zealand by eight wickets and a crushing 82-run thrashing by Afghanistan ended their hopes of advancing to the Super 8 stage. Despite flashes of resilience with the bat, Canada’s inability to maintain consistency with both bat and ball proved costly.
The Prime Minister’s warm words signal a thaw in relations, using cricket as a universal language to foster stronger economic and strategic ties. As both leaders engage with CEOs, the forum underscores opportunities in trade, technology, and innovation, setting the stage for renewed partnership.
