Nagpur, India – New Zealand has bolstered its squad for the upcoming T20I series against India by including promising all-rounder Christian Clarke in the first three matches. The series kicks off Wednesday in Nagpur, with the Black Caps aiming to maintain momentum after their recent ODI triumph.
Injuries to key pacers Adam Milne and spinner Michael Bracewell have prompted this move. Milne picked up a hamstring injury during the SA20 league in South Africa, while Bracewell nursed a minor calf strain from the third ODI in Indore. Clarke steps in as a vital backup to manage the bowling workload effectively.
The young talent shone brightly on his ODI debut tour against India, claiming seven wickets across three games – including twice dismissing Virat Kohli. Clarke also contributed with the bat lower down the order and snapped up two sharp catches, showcasing his all-around skills.
Head coach Rob Walter praised Clarke’s composure under pressure. ‘He’s shown real talent in the ODIs, but what stood out was his calmness and ability to perform when it matters,’ Walter said. This inclusion gives Clarke extra time with the group on his first tour to India.
Bracewell has arrived in Nagpur and will be monitored closely before a decision on his participation. Milne’s injury assessment continues. Meanwhile, the team is in high spirits after clinching the ODI series in Indore – a historic first against India on their home soil.
Walter highlighted the team’s unity: ‘Outstanding teamwork and individual brilliance delivered something we’ve never achieved before.’ New Zealand’s camp buzzes with confidence as they gear up for the T20 challenge.
