Brazilian football icon Neymar has dropped a bombshell, hinting at a potential retirement from the sport as early as December 2026. Speaking candidly on Brazil’s online channel ‘Cazé’, the 34-year-old star revealed he’s living ‘year by year’ due to persistent injuries that have plagued his illustrious career.

‘I don’t know what will happen from now on. I don’t even know about next year. Maybe when December comes, I might want to retire,’ Neymar confessed. His words underscore the toll of recurring health issues, which have sidelined him repeatedly and cast doubts over his participation in major tournaments.

This comes at a pivotal time, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon. Neymar emphasized its importance: ‘This is a World Cup year. It’s very important, both for the Brazil national team and for me.’ Yet, Brazil’s manager Carlo Ancelotti has been clear—only fully fit players will make the cut for the tournament, set to unfold from June 11 to July 19 across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Neymar’s recent journey has been a mix of triumphs and setbacks. Last month, he extended his contract with boyhood club Santos, returning in January 2025 and firing five goals in the season’s final five matches to help keep them at the top. However, a recent successful knee surgery highlights his ongoing battle with injuries. Since October 2023, he hasn’t featured for Brazil, despite holding the record with 79 international goals.

Neymar burst onto the scene in 2010 at age 18, hailed as the next global superstar. His dazzling skills shone through on multiple occasions, but injuries robbed him of prime years, allowing younger talents to surge ahead. As fans hold their breath, Neymar’s future hangs in the balance—will he lace up for one last World Cup glory, or bid farewell sooner than expected?
