Sai Sudharsan’s determined 87-run innings against West Indies on Day 1 of the second Test was punctuated by a post-dismissal coaching session with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. The young batter, who has faced criticism for his early Test career, showcased resilience and skill before falling just 13 runs shy of a maiden Test century.

After a disappointing outing in the first Test, Sudharsan responded with a composed performance. He reached his fifty in 87 balls and formed a crucial partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who dominated the scoring. Sudharsan’s innings included 12 boundaries and demonstrated a more confident approach to his batting.

The turning point came when spinner Jomel Warrican found an edge and struck Sudharsan on the pads. An umpire’s decision, upheld on review, sent him back to the pavilion for 87 off 165 deliveries. Immediately after his departure, Kotak was seen delivering a detailed critique on the balcony, highlighting the technical lapse.

Sudharsan later spoke about his batting philosophy for the innings, emphasizing playing naturally and avoiding pressure. He credited his partnership with Jaiswal and expressed a desire for more substantial contributions in the future. He acknowledged the support from his teammates and coaching staff.

India ended the day in a commanding position at 318/2, with Sudharsan’s score being a significant part of their success. The team management has consistently backed Sudharsan for the number three spot, despite a competitive environment. Batting mentor Ryan ten Doeschate has previously noted that while spots are fiercely contested, the team has faith in Sudharsan’s abilities, even acknowledging potential ‘tactical mistakes’ in his approach. Kotak’s direct intervention signals the ongoing effort to mold Sudharsan into a consistent performer.
