MELBOURNE — Former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev kicked off his Australian Open campaign with a commanding performance, advancing to the second round after defeating Netherlands’ Jesper de Jong in straight sets. The match, which unfolded over 2 hours and 53 minutes on Margaret Court Arena, ended 7-5, 6-2, 7-6(2) in Medvedev’s favor.

Fresh off his Brisbane International triumph, Medvedev extended his perfect 6-0 record for the 2026 season. He capitalized on seven of 13 break point opportunities, showcasing his aggressive returning and mental fortitude. The contest wasn’t without tension—Medvedev squandered leads in the first set and failed to close out the third on serve twice—but his composure shone through in the tiebreak, where he dominated.

Ranked 73rd, de Jong faced Medvedev for the first time in testing slow conditions that disrupted serves for both. Yet, Medvedev’s big-match experience prevailed, especially in the decisive tiebreak where he offered no quarter.

Last season’s ups and downs, including just one Grand Slam title, gave way to renewed confidence with an ATP 250 win in Almaty. This victory signals Medvedev’s serious intent in the title race. Post-match, he expressed relief at securing a straight-sets win after early exits in majors last year.

Up next, Medvedev faces France’s Quentin Halys, who dispatched Alejandro Tabilo in the opener. With momentum on his side, the Russian is primed for a deep run.
