Kolkata, March 3: As South Africa gears up for a blockbuster T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal clash against New Zealand on March 4, captain Aiden Markram is radiating confidence. The Proteas have stormed into the last four unbeaten, and Markram insists his side will leave no stone unturned to deliver their peak performance once again.

Reflecting on their group-stage triumph over New Zealand by seven wickets on February 14, Markram cautioned against complacency. ‘That was a solid win, but both teams have played a lot of cricket since then,’ he said during a pre-match press conference. ‘Wednesday marks a fresh start. This semifinal promises fireworks, and repeating that victory to reach the final won’t be straightforward.’

South Africa’s journey has been remarkable, especially after the heartbreak of losing the 2024 T20 World Cup final to India. Needing just 30 runs off 30 balls, they fell short by seven. Yet, the Proteas bounced back fiercely, dominating Super 8 encounters against India, West Indies, and Zimbabwe.

Markram dismissed talks of favoritism. ‘Opinions vary on who’s the favorite, but we’re focused on playing our brand of cricket and sustaining the form we’ve built over the past 18 months,’ he asserted. His own batting has been stellar—268 runs in seven matches, including three half-centuries, with a top score of 86.

Under Markram’s leadership, South Africa boasts an impressive T20 World Cup record: 15 wins in 16 games, the sole loss being that 2024 final. He credits senior players for guidance. ‘Our experienced campaigners are invaluable—they lead and clear doubts when needed.’

With history on the line, Markram’s Proteas aim to shatter their semifinal jinx and march towards glory. Fans are braced for an epic battle.
