WELLINGTON – New Zealand’s pace spearhead Lee Tahuhu has announced her retirement from One Day International cricket, drawing the curtain on a stellar 15-year career that saw her become a cornerstone of the White Ferns. The 35-year-old fast bowler, who played 103 ODIs, will remain available for T20 duties, keeping her fiery pace in the shorter format.

In a heartfelt statement released by New Zealand Cricket, Tahuhu reflected on her journey. ‘Wearing the team’s jersey in ODIs has always been a source of immense joy and pride for me. Every single game felt like a privilege, and representing my country in over 100 matches is something I never even dreamed of,’ she said.

Tahuhu cherishes every moment and leaves the format with her head held high, proud of her achievements. Her final ODI appearance is set for the 2025 Women’s World Cup in India against England, marking the end of an era.

Looking ahead, the veteran pacer is buzzing with excitement for T20 cricket. ‘There are so many thrilling opportunities ahead, and I’m eager to keep contributing in T20s. Winning the 2024 T20 World Cup was a massive triumph, and I’m motivated to help defend the title at the end of this year in England,’ Tahuhu added.

One of only 12 players to have played over 100 ODIs for New Zealand women, Tahuhu boasts a remarkable record. She has featured in four World Cups, consistently ranked among the top 10 ODI bowlers, and earned a spot in the ICC Women’s ODI Team of the Year in 2023. Her career stats include 125 wickets in 103 ODIs at an average pace that terrorized batters.

Head coach Ben Sawyer praised her longevity and impact. ‘Lee has been at the top of women’s ODIs for 15 years – an extraordinary feat for a fast bowler. Her speed was always a weapon, but her competitive spirit and drive to elevate the team set her apart,’ he said.

Sawyer highlighted her leadership in the bowling group, noting how she’s positioned the unit strongly for the next four-year cycle. As New Zealand’s leading ODI wicket-taker, Tahuhu’s retirement is a proud milestone. She debuted in 2011 at age 20 against Australia in Brisbane’s Rose Bowl series, and since then, has set new benchmarks for the team.

New Zealand cricket fans will miss her thunderbolts, but her legacy endures.
