Kumble: Abhishek Sharma’s Mind is Confused in T20 WC

India’s march to the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinals hit a high note with Sanju Samson’s explosive 97-run knock powering a dominant win over West Indies in Kolkata. But amid the celebrations, a cloud hangs over opener Abhishek Sharma’s dismal form.

Former Indian captain Anil Kumble, speaking on ESPNcricinfo, pulled no punches. ‘Abhishek’s mind seems a bit tangled right now, and there’s a clear lack of confidence,’ Kumble observed. He urged the team to ease the pressure on the young batter, noting that India’s victories have only amplified Abhishek’s sense of responsibility.

Despite the struggles, Kumble advised against dropping Abhishek for the semifinal. The left-hander, currently the world’s top T20 batter, has endured a nightmare tournament. Three consecutive ducks scarred his campaign, redeemed only by a gritty half-century against Zimbabwe. Yet, in the crucial West Indies clash, he managed just 10 runs.

Abhishek’s pre-tournament illness disrupted his rhythm, and he’s scrambling to rediscover his explosive touch. In 43 T20 innings across 44 matches, he’s amassed 1,377 runs at a blistering strike rate of 189.40, including two centuries and nine fifties. His highest score of 135 stands as the highest by an Indian in the format.

As India eyes the final, Abhishek’s bat will be pivotal. A big knock in the semifinal could silence critics and propel the team forward. The pressure is on, but so is the potential for a stunning turnaround.
