New Delhi is buzzing with excitement as the inaugural Khel India Tribal Games (KITG) gets set to kick off from March 26 to April 6 in Chhattisgarh’s vibrant cities of Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Surguja. Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, made the official announcement on Thursday, marking a historic step towards inclusive sports development.
The event will feature seven medal disciplines: athletics, football, hockey, weightlifting, archery, swimming, and wrestling. Adding to the thrill, two demonstration sports—mallakhambh and kabaddi—will showcase traditional Indian flair. Athletes from across most states and union territories of India are expected to compete, highlighting the nation’s diverse talent pool.
Dr. Mandaviya emphasized the games’ role in providing platforms for every aspiring youth. ‘This is part of our ongoing efforts to give every young person who wants to play a chance and a stage,’ he stated. Aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India, these games underscore sports’ pivotal role in national progress.
Focusing on tribal regions, the minister highlighted how KITG will nurture emerging talents from these areas. Strengthening the player base from tribal communities is crucial, he noted, ensuring early identification, systematic support, and integration into the national sports ecosystem.
The logo, theme song, and mascot were unveiled on December 23 at B.R. Yadav Sports Stadium in Bilaspur, with Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai and Deputy CM Arun Sao in attendance. The mascot ‘Morveer’—derived from ‘Mor’ (ours in Chhattisgarhi) and ‘Veer’ (brave)—symbolizes the pride, spirit, and identity of India’s tribal communities.
Organized jointly by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Indian Olympic Association, national sports federations, and the Chhattisgarh organizing committee, the 2026 edition will adhere to international standards. Chhattisgarh’s hosting of this event positions it as a pioneer in tribal empowerment through sports.
As part of the flagship Khelo India scheme, KITG aims to boost grassroots participation and excellence. Declared an event of national importance under the Sports Broadcasting Signals Act, 2007, it promises to inspire generations and reshape India’s sporting landscape.
