In a thrilling encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, South Africa clinched a commanding seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the 24th match of the T20 World Cup 2026. This win marked their third consecutive triumph in the tournament, propelling them to the top of Group D standings.

New Zealand, batting first, managed a competitive total of 175 for 7 in their 20 overs. However, it was South Africa’s pace spearhead Marco Jansen who turned the game on its head. The towering left-armer claimed an incredible four wickets for 40 runs in his quota of four overs, dismantling key partnerships in the middle and death overs. His unique angle from the left and ability to vary his deliveries left the Kiwi batsmen struggling.

Captain Aiden Markram, who remained unbeaten on a brisk 86 off 44 balls studded with eight fours and four sixes, showered praise on Jansen post-match. ‘His left-arm angle is something different. He’s got that height and mixes his deliveries brilliantly. It’s a massive asset for him and the team. Stats might not fully capture his impact this tournament, but those four wickets today broke crucial stands,’ Markram noted.

Chasing down the target, South Africa cruised home in just 17.1 overs, showcasing their batting depth and composure. Markram also credited the toss win and the bowlers’ effort in restricting New Zealand on a pitch that later favored batsmen. ‘The ball came on nicely in the second innings, but our bowlers worked hard to keep them to that score. It was a complete team performance,’ he added.

Reflecting on his own knock, Markram emphasized the importance of a solid start. ‘My aim is always to give the team a strong platform. Our batting line-up is experienced and full of power. In this powerplay-heavy era, we need to be aggressive, even if it doesn’t always come off.’

This victory not only boosts South Africa’s morale but also sends a strong message to their rivals in the group stage. With momentum on their side, the Proteas look poised for a deep run in the tournament.
