In a stunning display of defiance amid escalating regional tensions, Iran’s women’s football team refused to sing their national anthem before their opening match against South Korea at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 in Australia. The players stood motionless on the pitch, lips sealed, as the stadium speakers blared the anthem associated with the Islamic regime.

This bold act comes on the heels of reported military clashes involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, including unconfirmed claims of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s death in an attack. The Middle East simmers with uncertainty, and the team’s silent protest resonated deeply with spectators. Some in the crowd waved pre-Islamic Revolution flags, symbols of opposition to the current government, while others watched in hushed anticipation.

Head coach Marzieh Jafari sidestepped questions on the anthem snub and rumors surrounding Khamenei’s fate, insisting her focus remains solely on the tournament. ‘We need to concentrate on the games,’ she stated firmly from the sidelines.

On the field, South Korea dominated, securing a 3-0 victory. Choi Yu-ri broke the deadlock in the 37th minute, followed by Kim Hye-ri’s brace in the 59th and 75th minutes, sealing a convincing win for the Koreans.

Iran’s squad eyes a spot in the Brazil Women’s World Cup, requiring at least a quarter-final finish in this tournament. Their next challenge is a Thursday clash with hosts Australia. Meanwhile, India’s campaign kicks off March 4 against Vietnam in Perth, marred by ill-fitting training jerseys that have frustrated players despite late arrivals.
