The anticipation for the IPL 2026 auction is heating up, with Australian all-rounder Cameron Green already making waves. In a simulated bidding war, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged victorious, securing Green for an astounding Rs 30.5 crore. This high valuation underscores his status as a top-tier talent.

Despite a registration mix-up that listed him as a batter, Green is expected to be a focal point of intense bidding between KKR and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the upcoming official auction in Abu Dhabi. Both franchises recognize the immense value he brings to a team.

Analysts had projected that CSK might allocate a significant portion of their budget, around Rs 25-28 crore, for a middle-order all-rounder. However, it’s anticipated that they might cap their spending at approximately Rs 20 crore in the actual auction to ensure they can acquire a diverse range of players, maintaining a well-rounded squad.

KKR also made a strategic move in the mock auction by acquiring Sri Lankan speedster Matheesha Pathirana for Rs 13 crore. The primary objective behind this acquisition is to strengthen their death bowling unit, a crucial component for success in T20 cricket. Pathirana’s effectiveness at the death, combined with KKR’s coaching expertise, makes this a promising partnership.

On the other side, CSK used their mock auction resources to pick the in-form Sarfaraz Khan for Rs 7 crore. His current batting prowess and aggressive style are seen as significant assets that can justify the price tag. CSK believes that Sarfaraz’s ability to deliver match-winning performances makes him a valuable acquisition for their lineup.

CSK’s mock auction strategy also involved reinforcing their spin bowling options with Rahul Chahar and Wanindu Hasaranga, addressing the need for quality spinners. They also bolstered their pace attack by signing Anrich Nortje, known for his blistering pace and ability to bowl effective yorkers. The team’s philosophy of integrating promising young talent with established stars aims to cultivate a fearless and dynamic playing environment.
