AHMEDABAD: Netherlands captain Scott Edwards was left impressed by India’s explosive batting depth after his team’s 17-run defeat in their final T20 World Cup 2026 group stage match at Narendra Modi Stadium.
India posted a formidable 193 for 6 after electing to bat first. Netherlands responded valiantly with 176 for 7, falling just short despite a spirited chase.
Edwards singled out India’s lower-order firepower as the game-changer. ‘They have tremendous firepower right down to the lower order,’ he admitted. ‘Holding them till the 14th-15th over was outstanding, but we missed a few chances, and execution faltered at crucial moments. Those players make you pay.’
Aryan Dutt shone for Netherlands, claiming 2 wickets for just 19 runs in his 4 overs. ‘Full credit to Aryan,’ Edwards praised. ‘He’s been outstanding for the last few years and really challenged the Indian batters. We felt in the game throughout.’
India stumbled to 118 for 4 after 15 overs, but Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya unleashed a barrage, propelling the hosts to victory. Netherlands, finishing fourth in Group A with one win from four matches, reflected on lessons learned.
‘Coming to India, you always learn a lot,’ Edwards said. ‘Different conditions, smaller grounds, flat pitches, electric crowds – it’s all unique. We were good in patches but fell short in key moments. In a short tournament with just four games, you must capitalize on those big moments.’
The defeat ends Netherlands’ campaign, but Edwards remains optimistic about their growth against top teams like India.
