In a landmark achievement for Indian boxing, the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) has been granted full membership by the International Boxing Association (IBA). This decision, approved during the IBA Board meeting on February 6, 2026, marks a new chapter for the sport in India.
The official confirmation arrived via a letter from IBA’s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, on February 9. IBA President Umar Kremlev personally congratulated IABF chief Rakesh Mishra, praising the federation’s unwavering commitment to boxing, its transparent governance, and adherence to international standards.
‘This is a proud moment,’ Kremlev wrote. ‘Your dedication to the sport and the high standards you’ve established have earned IABF a valued spot in the IBA family.’ He expressed delight in welcoming India’s national federation and anticipated collaborative efforts to propel global boxing forward.
Kremlev highlighted how IABF’s active involvement would inject fresh energy into the worldwide boxing movement. As a full member, IABF now receives official invitations to upcoming international tournaments and events under IBA auspices.
The partnership is expected to strengthen the global boxing community, with Indian boxers poised to make significant contributions. IABF President Rakesh Mishra described the membership as a game-changer, opening doors to top-tier training, technical support, and invaluable international exposure for Indian pugilists.
Secretary General Rakesh Thakran linked this milestone to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of elevating Indian athletes on the Olympic stage. He outlined plans to scout grassroots talent and intensify preparations for future Olympics, working under Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya’s guidance to ensure comprehensive development and robust international representation.
