As the cricketing world gears up for the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal clash between India and England on March 5 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, fans are revisiting a storied rivalry that has produced some unforgettable moments. This will mark the sixth time these two powerhouses face off in the tournament, with two previous encounters already decided in the semifinals.

The journey began back in 2007, when a young India, led by the explosive Yuvraj Singh, stunned England. Yuvraj’s iconic six sixes in an over propelled India to a massive 218/4. England fought valiantly but fell short at 200/6, handing India an 18-run victory that set the tone for their inaugural T20 World Cup triumph.

Fast forward to 2009 in London, and England scripted revenge. Batting first, they posted 153/7. India, despite a gritty unbeaten 33 off 17 from Yusuf Pathan, managed only 150/5, losing by 3 runs in a nail-biter that showcased the fine margins of T20 cricket.

In 2012’s group stage at Bangalore, India dominated with Gautam Gambhir’s 45, Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten 55, and a brief cameo from Virat Kohli. Their 170/4 proved too much as England crumbled to 80 all out in 14.4 overs, handing India a comprehensive 90-run win.

The stakes skyrocketed in 2022’s semifinal in Adelaide. India batted first for 168/6, but England’s openers Jos Buttler (80*) and Alex Hales (86*) chased it down in just 16 overs without losing a wicket—a humiliating 10-wicket defeat for the Men in Blue.

India roared back in the 2024 semifinal, avenging that loss with a thumping 68-run victory. Setting 171/7, their bowlers, led by stellar performances, skittled England for 103 in 16.4 overs. Key contributions from the top order and lethal spin sealed a statement win en route to the title.

With three wins and two losses so far, India holds a slight edge. As both teams prepare for 2026, expect fireworks at Eden Gardens, where history could repeat or rewrite itself.
