The encounter between India and Sri Lanka featured an enthralling match that set the stage for the Asia Cup final. The result was decided in a Super Over, filled with intense action and unexpected turns, where Team India showcased an impressive victory, further solidifying their position in the tournament. Arshdeep Singh, the key fast bowler for Team India, delivered an impressive performance in the Super Over, efficiently restricting the Sri Lankan batsmen’s scoring opportunities. Captain Suryakumar Yadav then stepped up, proving his mettle by capitalizing on the very first ball. This event marked only the second occasion in the history of the Asia Cup where a match between two teams ended in a tie.

The Super Over provided a thrilling climax to the India vs. Sri Lanka match in the Asia Cup 2025. Batting first, India amassed 202 runs, losing 5 wickets in their 20 overs. Sri Lanka matched this score, also achieving 202 runs while losing 5 wickets in their 20 overs, which resulted in the Super Over. Kusal Perera and Dasun Shanaka took to the crease for Sri Lanka, with Captain Suryakumar Yadav assigning Arshdeep Singh the responsibility with the ball.

Arshdeep Singh’s initial delivery saw Kusal Perera caught by Rinku, putting Sri Lanka at an immediate disadvantage. Kamindu Mendis followed and scored a single on the second ball, giving Shanaka the opportunity to bat. Arshdeep Singh managed to prevent any runs on the third delivery.

Drama unfolded on the fourth delivery as Shanaka missed the ball, which then went into wicketkeeper Sanju Samson’s hands. Samson hit the stumps as Shanaka attempted a run. Initially, the umpire ruled Shanaka out, believing the ball had touched his bat.

Upon review, the third umpire overturned the decision, declaring Shanaka not out. The ball was deemed dead. Arshdeep Singh then bowled a wide. On the fifth ball, Arshdeep Singh dismissed Shanaka. India then required just 3 runs from 6 balls.

India needed 3 runs from 6 balls to win the tournament. Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill were chosen to bat. Suryakumar Yadav, the captain, hit a boundary on the opening delivery bowled by Wanindu Hasaranga, ensuring India’s victory in the captivating contest. This was the second instance in a T20I against Sri Lanka where Suryakumar Yadav ensured victory with a boundary on the Super Over’s first ball.

Before this, a T20I between these teams on July 30, 2024, was also decided by a Super Over. Sri Lanka scored only 2 runs while batting first in that Super Over. Suryakumar Yadav secured the win by hitting a boundary on the first ball. This marked the second instance in Asia Cup history where a match concluded in a tie.

The initial tie in the Asia Cup occurred in 2018, during a match between India and Afghanistan. The 2018 Asia Cup adopted the ODI format.

In that match, Afghanistan, batting first, scored 252 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 50 overs. India responded by being all out for 252 runs in 49.5 overs, leading to a tie. The ODI format meant there was no Super Over. Kuldeep Yadav was also a part of that match.
