In a major announcement ahead of cricket’s biggest stage, Richard Ilingworth and Alex Wharf have been selected as the on-field umpires for the T20 World Cup 2026 final at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. The blockbuster clash pits India against New Zealand on March 8, with the hosts aiming to defend their title in front of a packed home crowd.
Ilingworth, the seasoned English umpire, will officiate his second consecutive T20 World Cup final. He was on the field alongside Chris Gaffaney during last year’s thrilling finale in Barbados, where India clinched victory over South Africa to lift the trophy. His resume boasts elite assignments, including the 2023 ODI World Cup final and the upcoming 2025 ICC Champions Trophy decider.
Joining him is Alex Wharf, making his senior World Cup final debut. The former England fast bowler transitioned to umpiring after stints in the 2022 Women’s World Cup and the 2023 men’s edition. The duo previously stood together in Kolkata’s Eden Gardens for New Zealand’s semi-final win over South Africa, earning praise for their sharp decision-making.
Supporting the on-field pair, South Africa’s Allahudien Paleker will serve as third umpire, having already umpired six matches in this tournament after joining the ICC Elite Panel. England’s Adrian Holdstock takes the fourth umpire role, while Andy Pycroft oversees proceedings as match referee.
Captained by Suryakumar Yadav, India stands on the brink of history. No team has ever won back-to-back T20 World Cups, making this final a golden opportunity in Ahmedabad. New Zealand, reaching their second final after a heartbreaking 2021 loss to Australia, promises a fierce battle under the lights.
