Ahmedabad is set to host a thrilling Super 8 clash in the T20 World Cup 2026 between South Africa and West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday. Both teams are hungry for victory to secure their semifinal spots. South Africa kicked off their Super 8 campaign with a win over India, while West Indies dominated Zimbabwe in their opener.

All eyes will be on West Indies’ explosive batsman Shimron Hetmyer in this high-stakes encounter. The left-hander stands on the brink of etching his name in history. Hetmyer has been a standout performer throughout the tournament, his aggressive batting proving pivotal for the Caribbean side.

In the match against Zimbabwe, Hetmyer unleashed a blistering 85 off just 34 balls, smashing seven sixes and seven fours. Across five innings in this World Cup, he has already cleared the ropes 17 times. One more six against South Africa, and he will claim the record for the most sixes in a single T20 World Cup edition.

Currently, Hetmyer shares the top spot with teammate Nicholas Pooran, who hit 17 sixes in the 2024 edition. Chris Gayle follows with 16 from 2012, matched by Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz in 2024. At 29, Hetmyer boasts an impressive tournament average of 54.75 and a strike rate of 185.59, amassing 219 runs including two half-centuries.

Regarded as one of T20 cricket’s most destructive forces, Hetmyer features in every major league worldwide. For West Indies, he has scored 1,564 runs in 70 T20I innings at an average pace, with nine fifties and 97 sixes. Remarkably, three more sixes in this game would make him the fifth West Indian to reach 100 T20I sixes, joining an elite club.

As the stadium buzzes with anticipation, Hetmyer’s blade could swing the match and rewrite records. Fans are poised for fireworks from the man who’s redefining power-hitting in the shortest format.
