India finished the first day of the second Test in Guwahati with a tangible edge over South Africa, who were left to rue missed opportunities at 247/6. The home side’s bowlers, with Kuldeep Yadav leading the charge with three wickets, successfully disrupted the Proteas’ rhythm, especially in the final session. The pitch at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium proved to be a balanced surface, initially aiding the fast bowlers before offering turn later in the day.

Despite winning the toss, South Africa’s top-order batsmen all made starts, reaching over 30 runs, but none managed to achieve a half-century. This inability to convert promising beginnings into substantial scores proved costly. An opening partnership of 82 between Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton provided a solid platform. However, India’s bowlers chipped away, with Jasprit Bumrah making the first breakthrough. Kuldeep Yadav then took center stage, claiming the wickets of Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, and Wiaan Mulder. Ravindra Jadeja also contributed with a vital wicket. As play drew to a close, Mohammed Siraj struck with the new ball, ensuring India ended the day in a strong position. The fading light led to an early end to play.
