New Zealand’s in-form batsman Daryl Mitchell has been sidelined for the rest of the ODI series against the West Indies following a groin injury. The injury, a minor tear diagnosed after scans, occurred during the first ODI where Mitchell showcased his current batting prowess. Coach Rob Walter stated that while it’s unfortunate to lose such a in-form player, the focus is on his recovery for the upcoming Test series. Walter expressed confidence in Mitchell’s ability to return to full fitness. In a strategic move to bolster the squad, Henry Nicholls has been brought into the ODI team. Nicholls’ inclusion is driven by his strong performances in the domestic Ford Trophy, highlighting his current good form. The coaching staff welcomes him back, emphasizing that rewarding in-form players is a key principle. With Kane Williamson absent and other players nursing injuries, Nicholls’ experience and current form are expected to be valuable. New Zealand narrowly won the first ODI by seven runs and will now aim to clinch the series in the next match, with the West Indies seeking to force a decider.
