Chennai Super Kings, the five-time IPL champions, have bolstered their coaching staff ahead of IPL 2026 by appointing James Foster as their new fielding coach. This strategic move comes as the franchise gears up for another title hunt under head coach Stephen Fleming.
Foster, a former England wicketkeeper, will collaborate closely with batting coach Michael Hussey and bowling coach Eric Simons. His extensive experience in the IPL, particularly from his stints with Kolkata Knight Riders as fielding and assistant coach, makes him a perfect fit for CSK’s high-performance culture.
One of Foster’s key responsibilities will be honing the skills of CSK’s wicketkeepers, including legendary MS Dhoni and Sanju Samson, who shone as Player of the Tournament in the recent T20 World Cup. This partnership promises to elevate the team’s fielding standards to new heights.
Born on April 15, 1980, in Essex, Foster debuted internationally in October 2001. He played 7 Tests for England, scoring 226 runs at an average of 25.11, while effecting 17 catches and 1 stumping. In ODIs, he featured in 11 matches, claiming 13 catches and 7 stumpings alongside 41 runs. His T20 record includes 6 dismissals in 5 games.
Post-retirement in 2018, Foster has been a coaching powerhouse. He led Desert Vipers to the ILT20 title in January and recently joined Birmingham Phoenix as assistant coach in The Hundred. His resume also boasts stints with England and New Zealand coaching setups.
CSK announced the appointment on social media platform X, welcoming Foster to the ‘Yellow’ army with pride. The team kicks off IPL 2026 on March 30 against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, followed by home games against Punjab Kings on April 3, Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 5, and Delhi Capitals on April 11.
With this addition, CSK signals its intent to dominate once again, blending experience with tactical acumen for a memorable season.
