Rakesh Sinha, a BJP leader, found himself at the center of a controversy following his remarks on the 2025 Asia Cup. At a program at Miranda House College in Delhi, he was questioned about the contradiction between the government’s past statements on Pakistan and its current engagement in cricket matches. His answer caused consternation, sparking a significant reaction on social media.

Sinha responded by distinguishing between political considerations and the realm of sports. He suggested that sports, art, and culture are global in nature and that cricket should not be politicized. This response was widely criticized.

In the wake of the controversy, Sinha issued a clarification. He attributed the misunderstandings to both the exclusion of his final thoughts in the video and some imprecisions in his statements. Sinha maintained that while he usually views sports and art as separate from politics, the case of Pakistan, with its ties to terrorism, presented an exception. He personally opposes the match, pointing out that a segment of the video was disseminated that exemplifies the ‘post-truth’ phenomenon.
