In a historic moment at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah etched his name in the annals of cricket history during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal against England. On Thursday, with the fifth over of England’s innings, Bumrah’s very first delivery of the spell claimed a wicket, propelling him to the elite club of the eighth Indian bowler to reach 500 international wickets.

Bumrah’s journey began on January 23, 2016, with his debut against Australia in Sydney. Since then, the 32-year-old from Ahmedabad has been a relentless force across formats, amassing 234 wickets in 52 Tests, 149 in 89 ODIs, and 117 in 94 T20Is. This milestone underscores his consistency and match-winning ability on the global stage.

Preceding him in this illustrious list are legends like Anil Kumble, Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh, Kapil Dev, Ravindra Jadeja, Zaheer Khan, and Javagal Srinath. In the ongoing T20 World Cup, under captain Suryakumar Yadav, Bumrah has been phenomenal, snaring nine wickets in six matches prior to the semifinal. Dismissing England’s skipper Harry Brook pushed his tournament tally to 10.

He dominated the Super 8 stages against South Africa and West Indies, topping the wicket charts for India. Notably, in the Group A clash against Pakistan at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium last month, Bumrah struck twice in his opening over, removing Sam Ayub and Salman Ali Agha. This achievement cements his status among India’s all-time greats.

Bumrah now holds the record as India’s highest wicket-taker in T20 World Cup history. Should he claim four more wickets in this semifinal, he could shatter Enrique Nortje’s record for the most wickets by a fast bowler in men’s T20 World Cups, adding yet another feather to his cap.
