Speaking ahead of the 2026 season, Chopra highlighted Bumrah’s unmatched consistency, noting that the star pacer delivers wickets and breakthroughs in every outing, no matter the opposition.
However, the real conundrum for MI lies in juggling their stacked foreign talent pool. With world-class overseas players vying for spots, coach Hardik Pandya faces tough selection calls to balance the playing XI effectively.
In IPL 2025, Bumrah featured in 12 matches, claiming 18 wickets at an impressive average of 17.56. MI kicks off their 2026 campaign on March 29 at Wankhede Stadium against three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders. Last season, they reached Qualifier 2 but fell short against Punjab Kings.
On a recent GeoStar show, Chopra elaborated, ‘Bumrah carries the weight of expectation effortlessly. He’s the kind of bowler who impacts every game – guaranteeing at least one wicket and stifling the opposition. His four overs are MI’s most prized asset. One in the powerplay, one saved for the middle overs, and two in the death. That’s Bumrah for you; pressure doesn’t faze him.’
Chopra pointed out the competition from Trent Bolt and Deepak Chahar. ‘Even if Bolt bowls well or Chahar is fully fit, Bumrah remains the focal point. But if Bolt is fit, MI will back him for that new-ball swing alongside Chahar.’ Shardul Thakur serves as a solid backup, though unlikely to displace a peak Chahar. MI’s core pace attack shapes up as fit Chahar, Bolt, Bumrah, and all-rounder Hardik Pandya, with Corbin Bosch waiting in the wings as a versatile all-rounder.
The overseas quota dilemma intensifies with explosive openers like Will Jacks and Sherfane Rutherford clamoring for inclusion. Chopra emphasized the envy other teams would feel: ‘Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock must reignite their opening fireworks, but fitting in these foreign stars alongside pacers is MI’s luxurious headache.’
